I imagine most of you already know about 'em, but some new 12/14 Uni or ext. E9th players may not.

I discovered these and many others back at the turn of 1990 when I first started playing 12/14 string universals.

You can use the added strings on the bottom to cover the guitar parts played on many tunes, but these are a couple that come quickly to mind:

Merle's "Carolyn" intro, ending. "Always Wanting You" intro, t/a.

Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her". First verse fills.

Sure, you can play the notes on any tuning, but the 12/14 string steel's lower strings are in the same register as the standard guitar.

I find a clean, crisp tone with tight bass sounds best on the low end and sounds very much like a straight guitar on these parts.

You're welcome to add your own findings to this list.

I use those bass notes all the time. Both my tunes on Charles Tilly's wonderful we site prominently feature the bass strings.

When I sit down at a 10 string, I feel the lower half of the guitar is missing.
