Tonight I was working on one of Toms solos in a Dwight Yoakum song...I was stumped by a single move which suspends a 1 chord while a counterpoint root walks down to the 7 in 1/2 steps...Can anyone provide me with an accurate copedant chart for Toms guitars?...And..Did he use splits?>..This is REALLY bugging me...

| There's quite a tricky bit in 'The Heart That You Own', which has a weird run-down, I worked it out for my own copedent, but I wonder if Tom had a lever that raised string four to F#, as it would make more sense for some of his solo's |

according to the copedent I listed from the Winnie Winston book there is a lever that did indeed raise the 4th..It has a little footnote here that says in/out - what ever that means.

Heart That You Own..Yep...and heres the dilemma...I can technically execute the notes with my copedent...but the timber is different because Im not using EXACTLY the same string groups he does...Im thinking it can be resolved using a string 7 LOWER from F# to F..Now the same group could be reached with this F-F#...as long as he was splitting a 6 whole lower with a half raise...????...Please MORE INPUT!!

I can say with 100% Certainty that toms copedent does not include a 7th string lower i know he rasied the 7th instead of lowering the 6th a whole tone so my thoughts are he didnt have the 6th split either i will look at his anapeg and the guitar that he recorded the "Heart that you own" on today after my show and jott down the changes for you ..

LKL: Raises 4 and 8
LKL(front): Raises 4 one whole
LKV: Lowers 3 and 6
LKR: Lowers 4 and 8
RKL: Lowers 5 and 10
RKR: Lowers 2(half and whole) and 9
RKR(front): Raises 1 one half and 7.

This following album I learned so much from. As you know, my first steel was a ZB student with 1 x knee lever and 3 pedals, and it wasn't long before I added more and I did copy Tom's copedent in them days and tried lots of combinations of pedal and knee arrangements. As you can see from the attached pictures, his set up on this record was differs from his later set-up as Rolene has shown us.
Rolene, when I had my first ZB, I used to get home from gigs in the early hours of the morning, set up my steel and play it learning from this record more than any other records I have. A close friend said I used to practice and practice til I fell asleep, and she remembers Apple Jack to this day, and whenever I see her she 'hums' the tune out even now. Funny enough, I am going through listening to some of these records again, and believe me, this is my favorite one still today.
Mickey, I will go to itunes now, and download the song in question and have a listen. I am sure you will probably get the info you need soon and work the lick out, but I will be in touch with anything I discover from listening to it.

Yep. Beautiful lick. If you listen, the counterpoint lick in the solo you would think is a split on the 6th with B pedal and G# to F# lowered but is probably simplified by Toms G# to G. With the C pedal of course. Either way, a split on the 6th is an advantage in my opinion as you have your 4 notes on it without moving the bar.
Boo Miller, I would really love to know the Anapegs full copedent please along with pedals.

| I want people here to know what kind of man Tom Brumley was. As many of you know I build and play new ZB's (Retro Steel). I first called Tom Brumley 3 years ago to let him know what I was doing. He encouraged me right off the bat. He told me that if there was ever a Tom Brumley lick that I couldn't get or advice on building steels to not hesitate to call him. This was on the first phone call that I ever talked to him. I had the pleasure of talking to him maybe 4 times. Each time he treated me in the most warmest Christian sense. One of the kindest, humblest individuals that I have ever met. A real person of character. And me, a shlep from Buffalo. He gave me some pearls of information that I couldn't have gotten anywhere else. I was hoping to meet him when he left. Every time I sit down to play or build another steel its with his memory in mind. A very special human being and legendary player. Thank you Mr. Brumley. |

Mickey Im not sure if I am listening to the same one you are and its the tail end lick at the solo but that to me sounds like a dim working back. again just thinking thats what I hear and have not tried it out. again I may very well be all wrong just kinda what I hear is all

Kevin, thank you for the kind words about Tom. He was that type of guy, always wanting to help someone. He always had time to talk when people would call. He was just the kindest man, best father, best husband and best steel guitar player ever. I really miss him .......
