This is for all you steel guitar memorabilia collectors: I'm looking for any reviews of any of Buddy's instrumental recordings. Apparently there was one for "Steel Guitar Jazz" from (I think,) Down Beat magazine that was done by jazz author Leonard Feather in late '63. (It may have been Cashbox or Billboard, too.) That's the main one I'm looking for, but I know there were lots more. I have one that was posted for "Emmons Guitar, Inc.," a while back in the Forum. I know there have been reviews of "Steel Guitar" and "...Sings Bob Wills" and I think a few if the Step One records.
Any help you can provide would be great!
BTW: The first one with the Feather review gets an autographed picture of Buddy.
For you all heading to St. Louis, ask around the convention! _________________ My best,
Ernie

Christmas Sounds of the Steel Guitar:
AMG Review
Buddy Emmons was one of the great steel guitarists, and it's always a pleasure to hear him play, even on an album as run-of-the-mill as Christmas Sounds of the Steel Guitar. Certainly, he plays well throughout the record, and it is a pleasurable listen, but the arrangements and tunes are too predictable for it to truly be a compelling record, even by Christmas standards. Still, hardcore Emmons fans may enjoy it, providing they can find it at a reasonable price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Our resident archivist, Michael Lee Allen, posted the Downbeat SGJ review from January 30, 1964 in this thread - http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=125804 - I don't think the reviewer (H.P.) was Leonard Feather.
Michael has the most amazing collection of cool vintage paper I've ever even seen bits and pieces of. Thanks, Michael. |

Wow, now that's a review I have to read! Harvey Pekar, the recently departed comic-book legend reviewing Buddy Emmons. RIP HP. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

American Splendor is the movie about Harvey's life and was nominated for an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay. American Splendor is a series of comic books he wrote:

Pekar was a major eccentric who made a memorable appearance or two on David Letterman's show--I think about the time "American Splendor" was released. He was right up there with Brother Theodore. |
