If you buy a new steel do you pay the balance after the guitar arrives at your house? I paid a 50% deposit on a new steel. Thanks, Don |

Wow, that's a large down payment. All the builders I know get the balance before it leaves the shop. But if you have a special relationship with the builder things might be different for you.

It is reasonable for any seller to require full payment prior to shipping to a buyer. Additionally, a large deposit reduces the risk to the seller from a complete lose should the buyer make the deal fall through.
If you're the buyer, you must reduce your risk by knowing the seller, or at minimum get some feedback (private email) as to any previous dealings with any members here on the forum. There have been horror stories on both sides of the fence on this one.
A 50% deposit sounds like something is being built for you. In this case, You should know an approximate delivery date within a 30 day window. There have been threads in the past where a well known PSG manufacture has stiffed some buyer where a large deposit was paid, and deliver never occurred, or was way past an agreed delivery date.
In today's world, both parties should have a clear understanding of what the other is expected to do, and have it in writing. Email is OK on a small transaction.
Let's not forget that most folks are honest. This forum is loaded with some mighty fine people. It's the few bad apples we all need to protect ourselves from.
PS: The forum rules are specific in this area, and assumes no liability for transactions between members. |

The balance is due once the guitar is built & ready to ship
deposits may vary according to builders - anywhere from 10 to 20 % |

My MSA Legend was $500 deposit with the order and balance due just prior to shipment of the finished guitar.

My HWP was 50% deposit but I had extra pulls from std. The balance paid to UPS if no carton damage. My plan was to pick it up at Herby's. As it happened Herby had just had his stroke. Worked out ok for me !!
I don't think you would ever have to worry about deposit money, no matter how large, with people like Herby or Mullen Guitar Co. _________________ Bill |
