I just dropped in to introduce myself as a new member here on the forum. I am retired and have been trying to relearn the pedal steel. In 1974 I purchased a Sho-Bud Maverick with just 3 floor pedals.I taught myself using the "New ShoBud Pedal Steel guitar Course". I played for about 15,or 16 years and sold the guitar as it wasn't stable underneath and was really frustrating. Now after at least a 21 year Hiatus I purchased another ShoBud from Jim Palenscar in Oceanside. This is an old single neck model 6140 that was converted to a 3+2 set up.(This guitar I believe is also from '74). Six months later I had Jim add two more knee levers to give me the "Emmons" set up(3+4). The Parts were from James Morehead and were superb! And Jim Palenscar is a Master technician!Any way I am lovin my new "Old 'Bud", it sounds so good through my Fender Super!
A previous owner etched their name in the left rear end plate...J Cox... any guesses or thought as to who that person is?

Welcome to the forum, Dana. I think you will find that this is a great place to find answers to any questions you may have about the pedal steel guitar.
I don't know for sure, but my guess concerning the name etched in the left rear end plate is Johnny Cox. If so, Johnny once played for Ernest Tubb, and I don't know who else. Johnny is also a member of the forum.

Welcome, Dana,
I also started on a converted 6140, which I still have. It has 3&4 and dates back to 1972. I got it used, and I've "used" it alot myself. It's a good guitar, and I think you'll enjoy playing it. Good luck in your re-learning the instrument. I started back just a few years ago myself, after a 15+ year absence. You fumble around at first, but then your head, your hands, and your feet remember what to do and it starts comming back to you. Have fun! |

Hi L.A., they're cool guitars alright, really great birdseye maple cabinets. Yeah I'm enjoyiung the guitar but sometimes I get down on myself for ever selling my first one, and being away from these incredible machines!I seem to do better when I don't focus on tabs and just play simple progressions.I want to focus on learning the fretboard so to speak. It similar to a regular guitar but not entirely.
It seems to me that a stock 6140 would have been perfect for a C6 tuning neck> Later, Dana _________________ Dana Blodgett

Thanks, and thanks for the advice!I've been enjoying my new "old" 'Bud. I need to spend more time on it, I've been side tracked installing laminate flooring in the family room. _________________ Dana Blodgett
