The Cavalcade Of Guitars was a dream of mine that I produced in Dallas, Texas in 1976. Emmons, Chalker, Tharpe, Anderson and Jernigan on pedal steels, jazz guitarists..Les Paul, Howard Roberts, Tal Farlow, Bucky Pizzarelli and Herb Ellis, jazz bassist Slam Stewart, legendary drummer Louis Bellson and saxaphonist Johnny Gore. It was the toughest thing I ever put together. A book could be written just about putting together this 6 hour concert and recording. Probably took several years off of my life. There was so much stress that during that year is when I first experienced what they call a-fib, arerial fibrilation.
Anyways, I am wanting to release the mixed down recordings of the portion of the concert when I had all the musicians on stage at the same time for two big jam sessions. I am trying to work out the legal requirements at the moment.
What I would like to know is if there is any interest in this project? I went broke in 76 and don't mind going broke again if there is any interest. That jam session was historic. The greatest pedal steel players in the world sitting next to the greatest jazz guitar players of the world jamming. There are licks on that session that have probably never been heard before and might not be heard again.
I have released one cd from that evening, the unmixed version of Curly Chalker and Julian Tharpe doing their individual showcases.
There just doesn't seem to be much interest here on the forum for steel guitar in the jazz mode. I just want to get this project out to the public before I leave this world because if it isn't released, it will be lost forever.
I would appreciate any input from any of you here on the Forum. That project was my lifelong baby and has been sitting idle for 34 years. The reason it wasn't released would be in the book about the production which I have written and might be part of the package when the cd's are released. An unbelievable story of an impossible dream that actually came true after a lifetime of obstacles that had to be hurdled in one year.
Thanks,
Dave A. Burley |

Lets set the stage at the Longhorn Ballroom that night of the Cavalcade concert...........Sitting in front and looking up at the stage would be............. Curly Chalker front left, Tal Farlow next to him, Maurice Anderson, Bucky Pizzarelli behind Maurice and Tal, Les Paul in the center, Buddy Emmons, Howard Roberts, Doug Jernigan, Slam Stewart and Julian Tharpe. In the second tier was Herb Ellis Johnny Gore and then Louis Bellson on the drums.
Typical jam type concept except there were 13 musicians to play. First set ended with Louis Bellson and a fantastic drum solo.
I would be interested in what Maurice's thoughts would be about that night 34 years after the concert.
Thanks,

I was lucky enough to be there that day. It was something I'll never forget. I'll take at least three copies. Every steel player should have this in their collection. _________________ Johnny "Dumplin" Cox

Of the 13 musicians featured on that night, only four are left. Bucky Pizzarelli, Buddy Emmons, Doug Jernigan and Maurice Anderson.
Actually I would like to hear what Doug, Bucky, Buddy and Maurice remember from that night.
We have lost Herb Ellis, Louis Bellson and Les Paul within the past year.
Actually my plans were to record each steel guitarist in a studio session with one of the jazz guitarists. I had it all ok'd from all parties concerned. It is unbelievable what these great jazz guitarists told me about each steel guitar player. Very impressive indeed.
One of the albums I had planned to produce was Doug Jernigan and Bucky Pizzarelli. After one of the musicians put a monkey wrench in the whole thing, after the fact, someone did pick up on the concept of Doug and Bucky and did record an album called Bucky and Doug which was released. Johnny Gore called me and told me about the session and I was invited to attend. Vassar Clements was also there as was Jimmy Bryant. I believe Vassar might have recorded on the album but Jimmy did not.
Thanks for all the comments, now, does anyone have any pictures of that night in Dallas?
Thanks,
Dave Burley |

I was going through some old Forumposts and came along this. It was quite a night no doubt and I'm glad that Johnny Cox was there to witness it all. We have since lost Maurice Anderson so of the original 13 only Doug jernigan, Buddy Emmons and Bucky Pizzarelli are left. So thankful that we got it done putting all of those great jazz players on the same stage with our legendary steel guitar players. I asked Doug Jernigan his thoughts of the moment when he was on stage and he said, 'I looked down the stage and saw Tal Farlow and those other great jazz guitarist and asked myself, what am I doing on this stage with these guys.' Well Doug, you proved that you were qualified back then and still today play with the best in the world. Hardest promotion I ever did in my life. I just wish the powers that be in the Steel Guitar world would have helped to promote what happened that night but they chose not to. Not enough E9th is what I was told and also what I was doing was against what they were doing. Never did understand that statement. I was just trying to promote the steel guitar to a higher level so they might be included in some jazz venues that they did deserve......The steel guitar is still not being promoted to other venues and genre's that would increase the visibility of the instrument and provide a lot more work for our many legends. Forgot to put in the above post....This cd has since been released as is noted under my signature. It's not a studio recorded project as it was done live so expect all the crowd response and etc. It is something that will never happen again and can be bought through CDBaby or through me.
