People will gather to remember Winnie (May 31, 1941 - June 12, 2005), to play music, and to share stories. |

Eugene, Good luck with the Winnie tribute. I wish I could attend. Winnie and Bill's book made me realize how great the pedal steel was and how much I wanted to learn to play it. I hope I never lose that spark.

The location does not offer much space to play music and/or otherwise jam.
A sound system including a few mic's will be set up and available for people that wish to play something at the event.
The reception is not a pot-luck but refreshments will be provided.
I hope that I will meet some of you at the event.

I wish I could play and have Winnie's talent
even though my feet are smaller then his.
So many of our brothern in our world of steel guitar have past away just in this year alone, it will be hard to fill their shoes. We will miss them all!!

Jim; The venue can certainly handle a few steels and a few amps.

When I contacted Ann Mintz (AnnMintz@mindspring.com) about what facilities would be available at the event she told me that a sound system will be setup with microphones for for instruments/amps.

It was a splendid occasion. Winnie made a huge mark in many walks of life. Indeed while most of us strive to excel in even one career path, Winnie excelled in multiple ones. As I'm sure many of you know, he was already a national banjo champion long before he ever met a steel guitar. He also taught design at the Philadelphia College of Art for 26 years, and there were many colleagues and former design students of his present at the memorial, testifying to his huge impact on their lives. In addition, many old-folkies showed up from his years of playing the Philadelphia Folk Festival, etc. David Bromberg was present to offer a song, as was Rosalee Sorrells, and many others. Winnie was also one of the world's leading experts in homeopathic medicine, and that world showed up to honor him too (and they all knew him as "Julian"). He really lived several lives before moving on; what a guy.
When I took the podium, I showed his pedal steel book to the assembled crowd and spoke about how many thousands of steel players (including myself) began our steel journeys with his "Bible" of steel guitar, and I read aloud a handful of expressions of gratitude from people all over the world who had posted on the Forum when he passed away. And then I played Danny Boy. On E9 of course. When I finished, David Bromberg shook my hand and said he'd been waiting for that all afternoon. It needed to be played. Of course. And so it was.
I had the pleasure of meeting forumite Eugene Cole there, and Chuck Campbell arrived near the end when he finished his sound check for a concert last evening. He was gracious in offering me and my wife, Jane, some comps for the show, so we capped off the evening by a glorious performance by the Campbell Brothers. I think Winnie would have liked that too.
Rest in Peace, my old friend. We won't forget you. |

| Thanks for the report on the gathering. Glad for Winnie's friends who could be there and share some of the many good times. Winnie definately "wrote the book" for so many steelers and his banjo with David Bromberg's "New Lee Highway Blues" is a must hear for me all the time. Onward we go. |
