Last night I saw Ray LaMontagne and David Gray. One of the best shows I've seen in years. For we steel guitarists, the highlight might have been some great playing by both Greg Leisz AND Eric Heywood in LaMontagne's band. They traded pedal steel duties with guitar playing, then both played steel together on one song. Magical.

Greg is my favorite steel player hands down, and I was excited to hear about his involvement with Ray, but I didn't realize there was another steel player in the band. Bet the song they play together is something special. Checking out a video someone else posted of Mr. Heywood playing on "Empty" awhile back. I'll have to look into the other stuff he's done.

Evan, the song they both played steel on is "God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise" from the new Cd of the same name. They both played on that song together on the Cd as well, if I remember correctly. Great stuff, not traditional country, just great music IMHO.

Eric takes most of the steel parts on the new album, but the do both play on one cut. Otherwise Greg is playing guitar and acoustic resonator. I like Eric's low-fi sound.
