I don't think it is known and will likely remain speculation, but I think I read in the last 6 months that Johnny Sibert played steel on at least some of the recordings for that obscure Nashville label (Speed)--other artists on the label included Bobby Helms, Lattie Moore, and Jack Toombs. None of them hits.
