Help! I can't find any info on which Bill Lawrence pedal steel guitar pickups are available anymore. Also, what are the differences in the 700 series vs. the XR16? I've been using 712's in most of my steels and love them. I recently bought what I think is another 712, but the poles go through the bottom plate unlike my other 712's. Is it a XR16?
Pictures of top and bottom of an XR and 710 or 712 would be helpful if anyones has any. Thanks guys.

Some are not marked and hard to tell.
In the past, communications with BL could be tough.
If you get them from a dealer you can get more information.

Rick, thanks for the pictures. So, it looks like the LXR16 and 710/712 look the same from the top. I'm still trying to figure out if there is any visible external difference between them. That, and what are the sonic differences between these two models?
While I'm posting, anyone compare these two BL models with the Alumitones? I'm thinking of buying a few Alumitones just to have in my misc. parts box of things to try out.
Ken, I've had a good time talking to Bill, but you are correct.

Dave I have used both 710s and XR-16s. Visually, they look identical to me, top and bottom. To my ear the XR-16 has a tad more body and a little less bright/bite. I have used 710s for a long time but when I had Carter guitar and MSA Millennium, the XR-16s sounded best to me in both guitars...

Their daughter Shannon has taken over a lot of the communications and shipping duties, so it's going much better lately - Bill had some sort of cancer which has now been dealt with, but their communication got real spotty for a spell. I don't really know the differences between the steel pickups, but here is the contact info:
http://www.wildepickups.com/How_To_Order.html

And the steel pickups are at the bottom of this page:

There's a "Lawrence" page on this forum, where Becky added a lot of info over time, but I haven't ever picked through it for steel pickups specifically:

Dave, I agree with Hook's assessment.

I have compared XR-16s to Alumatone.
the XR-16 is very forgiving and fun in a live situation meaning, that it has more compression.
Alumitone or (Lace Bass Bar) leans toward the single coil type sound... With out the hummmm/ Buzzz
They are both good PUs

I'm still trying to figure out if the pickup I have is a 712 or XR16. All the 712's I've owned had a flat plate on the bottom with no pole pieces showing. The mystery pickup has the bottoms of the pole pieces showing on the bottom of the pickup. Did Bill make 712's like this? Other than the poles showing, it looks exactly like my other 712's.
Thanks for all the input guys.

I've never had a 710/712 or XR-16 with exposed poles on the bottom side. I'm not sure what you have..

I have had 3 Bl712's and they all have registered in the 28-32kohm range. No pole pieces poking thru though. The only XR-16 I measured was at 21k. But I agree with Hook, on the sound characteristics.
