I had the unexpected pleasure of seeing Steve Fishell play his ZumSteel this past weekend as part of Patti Loveless' band. This was on Saturday night at Michael Martin Murphey's Westfest in Rifle, Colorado. Really tight band and great to see Steve filling in for their regular pedal steel player, Mike Daily.

The Zumsteel Steve was playin' was his 1982 Zumsteel D-10. It can be seen in McBride & The Ride's video "Every Step Of The Way". I wondered if Steve was fillin' in for Pete Finney cause Pete usually plays steel for Patty.

You are both right!

Patty Loveless' band leader Deanie Richardson asked me to fill in for two nights last week for Mike Daily. Once I got out on the bus the band confirmed that Pete Finney and Mike have been playing steel recently with Patty -- on seperate nights of course -- so I had big shoes to fill.

In spite of having no rehearsal time together, it was quite a thrill to "jam" with Patty and her red hot band. Her voice is a force of nature coming though the monitors...she is just a fantastic, masterful vocalist period. I was hanging by my fingernails on every note she sang.

Hey Tom, thanks for the nice words. Sorry we pulled out of Rifle before we had a chance to hang out. And Brett, good to hear from you my friend. You're right; the Zum is the same guitar I've had since 1982. It just sounds better and better to me every year, even though physically it has been tossed around the world a few too many times. It may be wise to start looking for a backup plan soon. Very Happy

Steve

Saw you with Emmylou in the late 80's. The tone you got out of that Zum was the reason I went out and bought one. You had this resonant mid bass thing that knocked my socks off.
BTW mine never did sound as good as yours. (maybe the player)

I saw you with Emmylou Harris' Hot Band Reunion, in '95 in Frankfurt.
There were several other acts on that show and she was the headliner. It was a great evening.

Jim Pitman,
Thanks Jim, you are much too kind. I'm never completely satisfied with my own tone but that is the nature of this beast called "steel guitar." The hands have a lot to do with it, but so does your mental determination to control the sounds you are making and hearing. The fact that you can remember a steel sound you heard some 25 years ago at one of our Emmylou concerts probably means I should have tipped the sound man a little more at the end of that tour. Very Happy Bruce Zumsteg deserves major props for the perfection he puts into each and every one of his instruments. I still love my Zum; it played perfectly the first day I got it and it still feels the same almost 30 years later.

Joachim,
Thank you! I'm glad you saw that tour. We only played one gig in the states (at the Fillmore West) but did 7-8 concerts in Europe with Trisha Yearwood and Marty Stuart. Albert and Glen D dragged me up and down the stage that night in Germany but it was a complete thrill to play with them again behind Emmylou and Rodney.

Jim Palenscar,
Buddy and I have a gentleman's agreement (a lawyer would call it a "non-disclosure agreement" but it's really just a personal understanding) not to mention "the project" in interviews, on Facebook, on the SGF -- not even to my wife and family (just kidding). Smile Buddy is one of the most humble human beings on the planet and I deeply respect him -- like we all do. Whatever he wants is fine by me. I trust you don't take this the wrong way, but to quote a wise southern gentleman:

"The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue."
