Hello To All!!!
I have been trolling the Forum for over 4 years (when I got my Sho Bud Maverick).
I am happy to say I just ditched the Maverick and purchased a Desert Rose S10 from Billy Knowles yesterday. It should be here by next week!!!
I definetly hit a roadblock with only one knee lever and I'm sure the new 3 pedal/5 knee lever arrangment will get me out of my funk.
I have searched far and long for anybody remotely local to take some lessons. Any ideas?
Even if there were some local non teachers, I am sure we could learn a thing or two from each other.
I'm in the Ft. Lauderdale area and any feedback would be much appreciated.
Thanks! |

Chris - Nice to know there's another steel player in the area, not many left these days, all the pedal steel players that I have known from the area since moving here in 1994 have left to go north or have gone missing, (no, not via UFOs). Not many bands or gigs left either, seems the clubs that used to feature country music have all shut down. Back in the 90's country music was eveywhere in the Ft Lauderdale area.
Keep in touch, and congrats on your new pedal steel.

Ken,
Great to know we've got some Steelers down here. Maybe we should set up a pedal steel fest (minature of course). I have a small studio that could accomodate 3 or 4 of us.
I am playing and recording pedal steel but it's not in a Country act per se. I would call it more of an Alt Country sound.
We are working on a record now so I can definitly share upon completion.
On a side note, MAE just had a used student model GFI come in the other day and I went to play it. It took me about 30 minutes to tune er' up and had 3 salesman in there watching me. Pretty neat because this is the first steel I have seen pop up at the local stores.
Didn't need or want another student model steel so I didn't buy it but they have a Pac A Seat in that came with it. May try to see if they will split it from the pedal steel.
Let me know if you would be intersted in "South Florida Steel Fest 2010". I am itching to learn form others. |

Chris - Hey man don't say it too loud, they'll be coming out of the sanddunes at Hollywood Beach.
It's strange, I do believe there are a few more steel players in the area, I have seen their posts on the forum. I have tried to make contact with a few but no one replys. I know there used to be few in the Miami area & West Palm Beach area, again this goes back many years ago. I know 3 who passed on, old timers, and about 5 who moved away. I know of only one pro pedal steel player who is with, The 18 Wheelers out of Miami, he's real good at steel & electric guitar.
There's another steel player up in the northern part of West Palm. If you search the Membership part of the Forum under Florida, you'll see hundreds all over the state.
What's the name of your band?? Where on earth do they play in Lauderdale.
I gave up looking for bands & gigs, I played with Southern Star in 1998-2000, Gone South, and Keith & West Band, again they crashed when the clubs started to close here in the area, Davie Junction was the last to close back about 5 years ago.
Getting together sounds o.k with me, keep in touch, my e-mail is listed here.

Heck, if Ken comes all the way up from Davie to see you, I might just join in! HA!
Yeah, wouldn't you know, I am in SE Florida more often than some think. But Ken knows that.
Hey, we could have ourselves a jolly little public tablature burning event on the beach some evening?

JD - Now that you sounded off, we can hijack Neil Flanz from Texas minus his P/P and who was that steel player you had over years ago, he played a single Deklay, get him to play a few bars, I'll provide the booze.

The band is called "Something Electric" and we definetly lean more to the alternative/indie sound versus country (but there is some twang in there).
We've played at the Pourhouse down in Ft Laud. and a few local clubs up in West Palm. We are working on a record rigtht now so we won't be playing out for a little while but I'll keep y'all updated.
Let's see of we get any more interest in a get together. We can certinaly shoot for planning somehting in September/October. |

I was just curious the other day, of how many pedal steel players resides in the West Palm-Broward-Dade County area.
The West coast of Florida seems to have plenty of steel players, they also have yearly steel jams & shows. Maybe they could switch to the east coast or even the Orlando area for their next steel show. |

Chris , there are more steelers down here than you can imagine. Down in South Florida, there are many Sacred Steel guitar players. And many of them are as versatile as Joe Wright himself. Chris Johnson is one of them. If and when you fellas have a 'Gathering" let us all know. Steel-on.

CHRIS - Did you get my 2 e-mails I sent to you?
I did some research on the SGF membership roster, came up with about 41 pedal steel players in the tri-county area.
