I recently bought a JBL K120 speaker on eBay Germany. I looks like it`s been reconed recently; black paper, shiny dentless dome. It looks perfect.
I have another K120 which has been my favorite speaker since I got it, so I know what it`s supposed to sound like.
This new one is nothing like it. Much lower efficiency, weaker bottom, shrill treble...BAD tone
Is there anything I can do ? The seller doesn`t answer my emails, so I can`t find out what kit it was reconed with or anything.
I`m not looking for advice on getting my money back, I`m looking for suggestions to make this speaker sound like a K120 should.
Thanks!!! _________________ Olli Haavisto

Almost all new re-cones require a break-in period before they soften and sweeten up. Some folks advocate playing it through a stereo system, etc. for several hours first. [If you plan on keeping it and can't get any relief from the re-cone tech, you have nothing to lose by trying this. OTOH, if it just sounds really horrible, it may be an un-salvageable poor job with poor re-cone parts.]
I don't believe that the output/efficiency would be affected though. Perhaps something wrong with, or some parts in, the voice coil are incorrect. Else, the cone paper is heavier and/or stiffer than your original.
I once let a perfectly good M30 Lansing go due to a new re-cone. I didn't realize at the time that a break-in was necessary. |

Can you measure the DC resistance of the voice coil?

you can always get a new JBL cone put in it if you suspect that the current cone is bogus. |

Sounds like it's 8 ohms alright. It was probably an aftermarket recone kit. If you paid with paypal, you can contact Paypal and they will get your money back for you and you can send the speaker back. He won't ignore paypal, they will freeze his account. You are in the right. _________________ "Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgement"~old cowboy proverb.

My experience has been that little dents have no effect on the sound. _________________ Olli Haavisto

Back to my problem...
So, do I have a bad recone or what?
It seems strange that the tone is not even remotely like my original cone K120. Should I re-recone it with a reputable kit or just forget it and file my losses?
Sending it over to the States is not an option due to shipping costs.
Anyone know a good reconer in Europe?
