Can anybody tell me who the steel player is with the Dave Nelson Band? ( Dave was one of the founders of the New Riders of the Purple Sage}

This is not your traditional country band by any means. They are more a bi-product of the "Grateful Dead" experience than anything else.

The guy just caught my ear. His influences seemed almost entirely west coast. A very smooth player is all I can say with a great sound. Just listen to his work on "Box Of Rain" to see what I'm refering too.

I'm picking apart his licks now and hopefully will add them to my "bag of tricks" soon.. lol

Barry Sless was with www.nelsonband.com. Barry now plays with www.moonalice.com/band
and does sit in with other bands when MoonAlice is on sabbatical. I'm not 100% sure who current full time (if any) PSG player is with Nelson, but they are all a pretty tight knit family.

I worked with a Steel Guitarist/Fiddle Player named Dave Nelson in the Santa Rosa area back around 1983...don't have a clue what may have happened to him. Nice guy though!!

Box of Rain... you mean the Grateful Dead version, or is there another one with pedal steel?

The Nelson Band did a version of Box of Rain as well. Barry plays with a number of bands, he's an excellent steeler.

Nelson has reformed the New Riders of the Purple Sage with Buddy Cage and they are touring pretty much non stop. They have a New CD out called "Where I Come From" thta has 7 new songs by Robert Hunter on it and may be about the 2nd or 3rd best CD they've ever done. The Current Lineup is Nelson on Guitar and Vocals, Cage on steel, Mike Falzarano on Guitar and vocals, Ronnie Penque on Bass and vocals and Johnny Markowski on Drums and vocals. They have a screamin live show you should really go see if they come around.
