We spent several days in Austin last week after having to evacuate Lake Jackson because of Hurricane Rita. We decided to make the most of it by catching some music. We went to Hill's Cafe Wednesday night for the Geezinslaw Brothers and the Kyle Sisters, Johnny Lyon also sang a few. Then on Thursday night we went to Jovita's for the Cornell Hurd Band. What a show these guys put on. The group has ten pieces including a guy playing rub board. Scott Walls did an excellent job on his Sho-Bud as did Howard Kalish on fiddle. Del Pushert (sp?) played some of the best sax I have ever heard. If you're ever in Austin on Thursday night, don't miss going to Jovita's to hear this great band.

Hello Larry - Great to meet you and your family last week. We saw lots of friends for Houston and the gulf coast at the show on Thursday. Real glad to hear you enjoyed the performance and thanks for the plug. We have a great time each week at Jovita's. We're also glad to hear you made it back home safe and sound.
Keep swingin',

Hey Howard, how come we never see Scott on the forum ? He is one of the hottest pickers around the area, and for those of you that may not know Scott, he was demostrating Sho Buds at the plant when he was 10 years old and stealing the big boys licks, or maybe he was showing them some!!! He has certainly shown me some!!! A great guy and a great picker! And Howard, tell Scotty I am sorry about accidently locking us all out of the bus in Lamesa, every time I see that broke window in the bus I think about that nite and laugh. I think I will leave it broke as a souviener!! |

Thanks for the endorsement C. C. I know you know your C&W and I'm glad you like the CHB.
Doyle - I've been trying to get Scott on the Forum for years. He works all day and picks at nite, so I guess he just doesn't find the time. You're right that he's a fantastic player with some great tricks up his sleaves and many original licks and great reinterpretations of standard licks.
I'll remind him about the locked bus in LaMesa story. We get a chuckle out of that one everytime we think about it.

Howard,
The Cornell Hurd Band (CHB) as well as your Texas Swing Kings have been a very important part of my "Swingin' West" programming. There are some real gems in the CHB CDs with some great fiddle work by you and steel by Scott. Both the current CHB CD and the previous one have given me number one "Swingin' West" songs. The previous album had that fantastic tribute to the Columbia Astronauts with Cody Nicolas' "Forever In A Texas Sky." Cornell's own "San Angelo" from the latest CHB CD just dropped off from number one.

Its funny to hear you mention LaMesa. I never heard of it until about 12 yrs ago. My youngest son was working for Long John Silvers in Odessa and they needed a manager for the LaMesa store. He went there, married a local girl, and now I have two lovely grandaughters. Thanks to LaMesa? The next time you are there go into Long Johns and ask for Craig Johnson and tell him you know the old man. He'll probably give you a discount. CC |

Back in the late 70's to early 80's, Cornell was a fixture out here in the Bay Area. When my wife and I were going together, and a for little while after we were married but before kid #1 came, we spent many Friday nights at some of the different clubs, particularly in Campbell near San Jose, rockin' out to Cornell.
Then Cornell decided to migrate to The Lone Star Republic-California's loss and Texas' gain!
Those were some of the best times we ever had. Loved that guy and his band!
