Merle Haggard will be profiled on National Public Televisions's "American Masters." It is broadcast in this area on July 21st - Channel 8 at 8 PM. Check your local listing for time and channel. As the story goes: In the late '60's, Dick Clark told Merle Haggard: "You're a movie star. Please would you just cut one or two pop songs? You could be as big as anybody in terms of crossing over." Haggard replied: "That's not what I do." |

Thanks Robert,
I did get the heads-up on my PBS stations just in the past couple days.
I'll be tuned right in - Cuz, "that is what I do". Merle is just precious. He's never shy or doubting about anything.

Yes, a very good look behind the scenes and some good concert footage. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

A insightful example of, " how the twig is bent, so grows the tree." I wasn't aware how much Merle's childhood profoundly affected his future, but then again, I suppose the same applies to us all, to one degree or another. I could have easily watched another hour of this, but that's just me. |

As a long time Haggard fan, I just HAD to watch. Wasn't disappointed in the least, would highly recommend it to anyone when it's shown again. |

Outstanding. When Marty Suart compared him with Stephan Foster or Irving Berlin he was right. Haggard is a pivotal song writer in country music history. He lived those songs. Not like some Nashville song writers sitting on a couch sipping latte's. |

I just picked up the Hag's latest CD "I Am What I AM". I really enjoy it.
It has some pedal steel on it by Norm Hamlett and quite a bit of dobro.
Hag wrote all the songs and it really reflects his bringing up and hie perspective on things.
Well worth the $10. |

It was great to see and hear the show. It's very well done. I've read both of Merle's autobiographies and a lot of articles through the years, but there were things in the PBS show that were news to me. I'm glad he opted out of recording any pop crossovers. _________________ HagFan

I loved the show as well.
I've read "Send Me Back Home".
I love Merle.
But I have a legitimate belly-ache.
My big rant, however, is never with a show, but yet my on-going problem with either PBS's saddlelite transmission, or Comcrap's delivery.
Both rat entities will pass the buck; that's what they do.
The SOUND sucked. Simple as that. Comcast will never fix my fu*&()*( problem. AND IT AINT MY TV, either. Here's a clue - all PBS channels, flip out.
I'm not making this up. _________________ Chip

I saw the show, and my impression is that Merl thinks he has finished his music career, and is hoping that his relationship with his current wife and children will compensate for the failure of his earlier marriages.
He hopes to spend the rest of his life in the country setting of the home that he has currently established in contrast with his earlier life.
As someone has said, we never recover from the failures of our youth......but, we can try. _________________ "FROM THEN TIL' NOW" |

I watched the program last night on the computer. I thought it was great. He's hard on himself, but I know he's got plenty more to offer. Plus Norm wouldn't let Merle just rust away in Redding. _________________ ZumSteel SD-10 5-8, GFI Ultra SD-10 3+4, Goodrich V/P, Boss DD3, FenderFM, Vegas 400.
