Topic: Session 400 Fuzzy sound |

I've had this amp checked by the two best techs in the milwaukee wi area.....Neither can find anything wrong with it, but when I play steel out of it for 15min or so the sound gets a little fuzzy. What can I do Now? I love this amp and need it repaired!!!!!!!!!!ANYBODY???? Mike Brown Maybe?????

Test with another speaker.
Tap around the edge and listen for dead spot.
I had a JBL do that and sounded ok at lower vol.
but a little more vol and it would get fuzzy.

I agree with Ken. Also, it could be a cold solder joint somewhere in the amp. Few techs will spend the time necessary to track it down...they are usually very elusive.
I used to run music through such an amp for a half hour with a dummy load, instead of speakers (to heat it up), then reconnect the speakers and proceed with testing. It was rare that I couldn't find the bad connection. Cold solder joints usually work when cold, but begin acting up when things warm up.

Take the amp chasis out and send it to Peavey ! You will avoid a lot of trouble. They will fix it right !

The amp I went through this with... I took to a number of very good techs and no one could figure it out.
Everything checked out including the speaker.
Sounded ok at low volume but at performance level it sounded fuzzy.
A couple of aggravating and expensive years later I took it to a guy in Pasco Washington, and he told me the speaker was shot.
He said tap around the edge of the speaker, and here is a spot that sounds dead.
I knew of the trick of pushing on a speaker and listen for scraping sounds, but this was a new one on me.
I took it home, put it back to back with another amp hooked up a different speaker and that was it.
Bad Speaker, not blown just bad..
I then went through hell trying to get that Gauss PS-15 re-coned and ended up throwing it in a dumpster!
Now when an amp gives you trouble...
First plug strait into the amp with a good cord...
Second try it with a different speaker...
It doesn't cost any thing and can save you a lot of money......
I have also seen this with mis-matched Peavey BW parts.
I have a BW magnet that appears to be in perfect condition and sounds like crap.

Nothing wrong with the speaker guys(I didn't just get off the boat).........I have removed the chassis and sent it to peavey....this will be cheaper than getting a new amp, and I'll have the amp I like. When I talked to Mike Brown He told me they will find the problem. So I have the Cabinet with the 1501, and for the time being, I'm playin Steel out of it, powered by My bass head (Peavey NITROBASS...300W) and a Lexicon MPX100. sounds fantastic!!!!!!!!!!! AND I CAN LIFT EVERYTHING....MAYBE I'LL JUST USE THIS FROM NOW ON!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, for your suggestions, everyone! JD

Gene,
I have the same amp basically in an LTD 400, except a smaller cabinet. The settings I have found to sound best to my ears are as follows:Volume (1 1/2 - 2) Presence (4) Treble (3 1/2) Middle (2) Shift (7) Bass (9 1/2 - 10) Reverb (4-5) Sensitivity (3-4). Of course, the volume and sensitivity controls are going to be relative to how quiet you need your amp's background noise cut out. On stage or at a live gig, your sensitivity could probably be at or near full on; inside your home for practice purposes you will probably find 3-4 is more appropriate. BTW, my LTD 400 has a 1501-4 Black Widow in it. Everyone says that particular speaker sounds a lot like a JBL D130, but probably handles a little more power. Hope this helps.  Roger |
