Hi bOb:

I was in a local music store that has the Mesa Boogie line of amps. I mentioned that I was interested in the 20/20 single space power amp but wanted to use it in mono. The fellow called Mesa Boogie and talked to a tech and said that as long as I didn't plug anything into the input on one side I could use one speaker in mono.

Have you ever tried this with your 20/20 power amp? I thought you had to have both speakers pluged in with a stereo tube power amp?

Ideally, each channel would have its own standby/on switch. As long as you leave the volume and presence knob(?) all the way down, no signal goes through the output transformer of the unused channel, and there is no possibility of damaging anything. The signal, and the subsequent voltage across the transformer with no load, is what hurts things.

It's still a good idea to present some sort of load to the output transformer of a live tube amp. Even with no signal present, they can oscillate at high frequencies when un-loaded. Some amps will place a resistor there to present a stabilizing load when the speaker jack isn't plugged in.

Hi Brad:

Thanks fo the info. I plan on using the Classic preamp with the 20/20 power amp. Will report back when I get the amp and hook it up.

Hi Len...Perhaps Brad will provide some input on this question. Is it possible to safely use a Y-cord (two mono cables with 1/4" jacks into one 1/4" jack, Musician's Friend #336281) to connect the preamp to both channels of the amp without risk of damage to either unit? I was curious about this when I was using my Classic preamp.

Hi David:

I actually want to play in mono using one side of the 20/20 power amp. I am going to use my Classic preamp for this and I am sure you could use a Y cord into both sides of the 20/20 if you wanted to use 2 speakers.
