This picture was sent to me by Don Triola, Son of his Mother, Steel Guitarist Beryl Harrell, who was very active in the So.Calif. music scene starting from the middle 1930's. According to Don, Beyrl's teacher was Sol Hoopi in the 30's. This picture of
Dick McIntire and Sol Hoopi which appears to be promoting the Dickerson Steel Guiitars and Amps. I remember when I was taking lessons that several of the other students had this make of Guitar.

2 giants of the steel guitar, 2 amps....and only 1 steel guitar.
Both played the C#m7 tuning of Sol's creation. Was Dick ever a student of Sol? _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

From the Richard Choy collection, I retain a similar Dickerson promo photo of Sol, with his actual autograph, Aloha pumehana, and the date, in Indian ink.
Choy was well known to autograph the star's names onto photos himself, but my copy matches the calligraphy of Sol as seen above.
It wouldn't command much at all on the celebrity market of today, but it's priceless to me. |

Ron: In talking with Don Triola he said the photo he sent me was a copy of his original from Beryl's
personal collection. If this photo had any monetary value I would never sell it, but would donate it to some organization's library. However, I told Don I would mail it back to him after I posted it on the
Forum. This photo was included in about six other photos of Beryl playing with differen't groups during her career. |

The Dickerson Co. did quite a few promo shoots with the prominent players who endorsed their product. I have some others with Dick and his group looking pretty shnazzy along side a steel and amp display.
It's interesting to see these greats dressed to the 9s back in the days when quality and appearance mattered. The 30s were a wild time if you weren't suffering from the depression. |

Here's the missing guitar that goes with the other amp in the picture.
