Hi guys,

I'm looking for an acoustic guitar with a wide nut suitable for setting up for lap style playing. Gibson FJN (Kelly Joe Phelps), Epiphone Troubador FT-98 come to mind ... any others to recommend... vintage or new ?

Thanks !

BTW, if you have the FJN or FT-98 you want to sell, please let me know.

I have a FJN in my shop right waiting for a bridge replacement. It belongs to the local vintage shop for whom I do a lot of repairs and restorations. I can find out what he'll be wanting for it when I finish it - which should be fairly soon.

John, will you be using it primarily in bottleneck slide fashion on your lap, or as a steel guitar?

Yes, but with a steel bar for steel guitar, or a 'tube' on a finger for slide? I've seen tubers (slide players) play guitars on their lap, maybe that's what you plan? Or do you plan on playing straight steel guitar?
Slide vs steel, two different animals, and all too often mislabeled/confused, thus taking away from either genre.

uh, ok.. so if I answer correctly, do you have one for sale ? Oh Well - A nut extender on an acoustic guitar is not what I'm looking to do. Will have a raised bone nut installed.

A steel. Shubb SP2, Tipton RT1, Scheerhorn chrome.

Thanks Ron...the more ears the better ! The reason for the FJN specifically is the 1 7/8" nut width.

Thanks Mike ! I'm in negotiations now. Yes, the FJN alter-ego guitar. Same specs, but a laminate version.

Just in case this might be sufficient http://cgi.ebay.com/vintage-Kay-Stromberg-Acoustic-Lap-Steel-Slide-Guitar-/200498632537?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar&hash=item2eaea65759
The price is right, and probably won't go much higher.

Just contact the seller if you need more pix...!

Just out of curiosity, if you're going to install a new raised nut anyway, why does the original nut width matter (within reason, of course)? There are historical examples of nuts for steel playing that extended past the fingerboard edge.

The neck is already set up for an exact (but taller) nut. Other factors of the FJN / FT-98 for lap style conversion are, 1)non-compensated saddle 2) flat (non-radiused) fretboard.
