In the other C6 thread we just lightly started the conversation about how the C6 stylings are achieved on the tuning setup I use in honor of Zane Beck. Today, I have posted some very simple ideas and examples of where this "C" mode develops on my setup.

First off, here is a chart detailing the "open" positions of Jimmy Day's C6 and Buddy Emmon's C6. You will see that my "C" mode encompasses both of theirs plus you get an extra "6th/A" note at the top.

Here is the video link where we start exhibiting some of this material:

NEXT: we will break down the 5 pedals and 1 knee lever of Jimmy Day's C6 setup. I will detail in charts and video how you find each position. We can then explore some other C6 copedents.

As we dive deeper into this C6 comparison study with ZB Tuning I would like to know what all types of setups that interest some of you. The E9th setups were easy enough to guess what might be of greatest importance. On the C6 I'm not as clear on what all changes, voicings, and setups might be of greatest need.

As you can see, I will first do this pedal by pedal comparison with the Jimmy Day setup. I just want to prepare beyond that if possible for any other common movements on the C6 that you feel are important.

Guys,
I spent the weekend with Zane going over these changes. All I can say, is to you E9 players that want to play C6 but don't want to have to invest in a lengthly learning curve this is the way to go. Zane has taken Zane Beck's original copedant and built upon it to the point that is has all the E9 & C6 and MORE. The way this tuning lays out, it will blow your mind. If your not satisfied with your copedant, and if you are wanting more, this IMHO is it. Give it a Try, it will totally change your concept of playing.

Dan

Okay - we are going to dive into this C6 / ZB Tuning comparison a bit deeper. Here is the chart of what many C6 players use on the 4th pedal. I have chose to look at the Jimmy Day setup first. Later, we can break down some other popular setups and some of the affinity voicings with C6.

Here is the chart:

Something I had not though of struck me while looking at your setup as referenced to C6.

Setting aside the issue of string order, if you start with the standard E9 and add the 6th as you do, you have the E triad with the additional dom7 (D), 9th (F#), and 6th or 13th (C#) extensions.

When you lower the Es, what do you get?

You have the B triad, B D# F#, and the extensions b3rd (D), the 9th (C#), and the 13th (G#).

Except for the D note, you get the same chord, but the changes will create different intervals. For instance the G#-A (standard B pedal) becomes a 6th to dom7 change.

I am interested to hear the rest of your C6 analysis around pedals 5,6,7 and the normal C6 levers.

I have my C6 set up with both D notes and all strings in pitch order as you do but all the normal Emmons changes (4 pedals and 5 levers, you can see it here http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=171984&highlight= ).

I have looked down at it and in passing thought "I could have the ABC pedals pedals pull on this neck and do everything on one neck", since when you have 6/9 and lower the root the tuning sort of circles back on itself.

However, to get all exact same musical moves I think I would need the same number of pedals. For example, the C6 pedal 7 double raise, how would that be done on the ZB setup?

Hey Scott, thanks for following along! All of this is like working a puzzle! Just gotta put it together a piece at a time. I am going to go ahead and try to get the rest of this posted for the basic C6 setup. That way once we get this established then we can move on to some really fun stuff!

My plan at this point is to present comparisons with Emmons and Jernigan's C6 setups. All of this work of course is something I will ultimately publish for my setup so it's a great exercise to sort of write this material as I go. The feedback helps it evolve in a very meaningful and practical way.

Stay tuned,
ZK

In the interest of trying to show a complete outline of the C6 Setup and the ZB Tuning Setup I am trying to post all of these as close together as possible. So you can go through each of them at the same time.

This is the study on the C6 Pedal #5 (Jimmy Day Setup). Here is the chart comparison:

Scott S. - I have a solution for the whole tone raise on C/A. I just simply have added another pedal. I have this about ready to post on my comparison with pedal 7 on the C6 and my setup.

I am very happy with the "E" mode of my setup. I honestly feel I have more musical space when I'm playing that "gear" if you will. However, in order to satisfy those who are deeply rooted in the C6 stylings, voicings and phrases it became apparent to me that I would need to consider some additions. As you continue to watch I think you will see that I have successfully established the C6 positions on my guitar at least with regard to the most basic 5 pedal 1 knee setup.

I did take a look at your tuning. Very interesting indeed. I'll have to study it more to see how mine compares to those changes in the C6 world.

I have for many years worked around this voicing but at the end of the day I still could not duplicate the sound of the whole tone raise with pedal 7 C6. I have once before toyed around with this idea but decided since my approach was to use all pedals, knees, and strings whether I'm in in "C" mode or "E" mode I never officially added it.

Now, it seems since my endeavor into the steel guitar world has taken me on new journey. I must look at some additions that make the C6 and E9 stylings more attainable on my guitar. Also, I now that I have added pedal 6 to my setup I have discovered that I can use it also in the "E" mode. I find myself even now keeping the LKL engaged while pushing the pedal 6. I also push Pedal 1 and LKL and then with my right foot I occasionally hit the pedal 6.
Very Happy

Okay in an effort to keep alot of this in one thread, hopefully you can follow my thought process here. Basically, we have taken a fairly standard C6 setup and compared from the open positions to each pedal. There is much more we can cover but for now I believe this will suffice as sufficient evidence that C6 stylings can be achieved with my tuning setup.

I'm going to post a video later but I wanted to let you know a little about my comparisons with Emmon's C6 setup.

Buddy's P4, P5, P6, P7 and RKL are all the same as above.

His P8 differs only with his "D" note at the top going to "D#". I can display for you that I have those same notes on strings 1 down to 6. He also uses RKR to pull his 3rd string to C#. I already do that with my RKRR so all of that is equal.

As for his LKL and LKR. This is my 6th string. I take it to Ab and Bb as well.

All that said, his C6 setup seems completely within my tuning setup. I will get exhibit this on a video soon.
