I own a square neck GoldTone Paul Beard Signature- M Solid Mahogany. http://www.beardguitars.com/guitargoldtonepbsm.html
.The guitar is beautiful and the sound is loud and
warm tho I find it a bit too "clean".Would unscrewing
the tension screw (beneath the palmrest bridge) make it "growl" a little?Thanks.

That will just make the guitar rattle. Try playing it _HARDER_. Really dig in and see how it sounds.

I'd agree with Howard. Resophonic guitars really sing when you get MAD at them.
When you say the sound is "too clean", what sort of sound are you looking for? What other players have the sound you'd like to get out of your guitar?

Seriously, I don't know if reso is your primary instrument, but I stand by my first comment. Rob is a very hard player and really digs in to generate a variety of characteristics.
The difference in guitar size and woods lend some difference of course, but only minor imho.

There are many videos on YouTube which support Howard's assertion. It's the player, not the instrument.

| I think folks are being a bit too quick to dismiss this. If the tension screw is adjusted too tightly, it could have a negative impact on the sound. That said, it would be more likely to dull the sound rather than make the instrument loud and clean sounding. I think you could experiment with loosening the screw by small increments (1/4-1/2 turns) and see if it has any effect. If not, just turn it back to where it was, and no harm done. |

Proper adjustment of the tension screw is a part of the overall setup, not a tone, volume, or other adjustment. I think folks here are assuming that John's Gold Tone is starting with a proper setup. If the setup is not right, including the tension screw, then yes, the advice should be to first get the setup correct.

I don't think that will give him the Rob Ickes sound he is looking for. Besides, if you are going to do all that, why not just switch to lap steel?
