I went & bought one of these thinking it was 8 ohm , but when I meter it it reads out at 15 K is there some magic way to use it on an 8 ohm amp ? did I throw away my money ? I can use a 4 K or 8 K but 16 ? is any body familiar with these ? HELP! When you say 15 "K" I assume you are referring to the DC resistance that you measured with an ohm meter. K usually means thousand. If the speaker is in good condition, it should read a DC resistance of about 5 or 6 ohms for an 8 ohm speaker. If you read 15 ohms, it's possible that you have a 16 ohm D-130F. I trust you calibrated your meter. I think a Vibroverb output transformer likes to see an impedance of 8 ohms and I think it will tolerate a 16 ohm load. Maybe the tube amp gurus can chime in on that.
All that being said, if the cone is original, there's some information that JBL used the same exact cones/voice coils on D series speakers and just labeled them differently to make customers feel better about buying the correct impedance. This came from a retired JBL engineer who worked at JBL at the time.
BTW, in the 80's, I bought an original Vibroverb blackface with a D-130F in it for $275. I played guitar through it and it was all it was cracked up to be and more. The fiddle player begged me to sell it to him which I did for $300. He later quit the band and left town with the Vibroverb and my then gorgeous girlfriend. I miss the amp .

I too am confused by your "15K" reference, if you read 15 K Ohms then something is wrong, no speaker coil will read that high unless it is open, in which case little or no sound will emerge from it. Maybe try another reading with another meter?
Does the magnet have the speaker's original impedance stamped on it? If it is a re-cone of course this will mean nothing but if it is the original cone that would be your leading indicator.
FYI your VIbroverb will sound great with that JBL 15" in there, if you get tired of it let me know... |

I think you must be reading the meter wrong are you on the 1 multiplier? or on some other mutiplier?
It can read 15 ohms and be usable with your amp not 15,000 ohms that just wont fly .. It is always better to run the amp at the rated ohms.. |
