Hi, Would anyone be able to help identify my wooden Rickenbacher lap steel and amp outfit? Or does anybody know of Eddie Maertems?

Yep; Rick made a limited number of those wood EH steels; I don't know how many. I've had a SWAG impression they were made during WWII's material shortage period; Although R&D and test marketing during the terrible and unpredictable pre-war economy also makes similar sense. I've seen two others, one I know to be "identical" to yours except for a white nut vs your black nut (only this punk pic survives my several computer crashes over the last 20 years or-so):
Even before I saw this one, J. Byrd told me about a small limited number of wood EH steels having been made by
Ric but hardly ever seen. I asked him if he meant the original wood frying pan, ...he said no, solid wood EH, guitar shaped body. _________________ Aloha,

What an interesting guitar and amp. I haven't seen anything like that before. I suggest you contact Gruhn Guitars in Nashville (http://www.gruhn.com) to see if they have any information on it.
Please post some more pictures of the guitar. It looks like a custom or prototype instrument. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Seems like each time we think we have seen 'em all, another odd-ball shows up
That amp is really cute |

Michael H., you have what I'd term as the steel tone holy grail combo.
The amp is extremely rare, and to see these at all but in such fine condition is a major treat. How fortunate you are to be able to play them.
Could you post more extensive pix of these beauties?
Jerry Byrd has claimed these wood body rarities to be amongst THE best steels the company ever made.
I remember one on ebay a decade ago, having gone for well under a grand. Just from the pix, the thing reeked tone, and it went cheap. |
