I've been usin one of these for quite a while, but reckon I overlooked the part in the owners manual, where it says you should keep A&B pedals down when tuning, unless you have minimal cabinet drop. But I don't think it explains their definition of minimal cabinet drop. Just wonderin how many of you guys keep the A&B pedals down when tuning, and what would you suggest is minimal cabinet drop? 10 cents 15 cents?
and as far as the dobro tuning on the strobo, I've tried the first one(sweetned tuning pure 3rds for G open)and my dobro sounds waay out of tune to me. So I've started tuning my dobro with my inteli 500. Sounds great. Do ya'll use the strobo -flip for tuning your dobro? I've never tried the 1/2 temperd 3rds for dobro. Which do ya'll use, if either?

Terry, you only need to engage A & B to get the ref on you Es
let them off, tune by harmonics : as you go along enter the values into your presets

yes, there will be compromise(s) ... Winking

Presets help here :

http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=181731&highlight=strobo+flip

Tuning by harmonics here :

1 : Open/no pedals for starters -
2 : pedals & levers will follow
using harmonics on each :
on left reference tone / on right string to tune
you'll be using frets 5 7 & 12 mostly
you will also need a harmonic on the 4th fret - certainly not as easy as on frets 5,7 & 12
look for it, it's there

lever E lowers Es a half
lever F raises Es a half
lever G raises F#s a whole
lever D lowers Eb a half
lever V lowers Bs a half

E : string 8 fret 5 / string 4 fret 12

B : string 10 fret 5 / string 5 fret 12

F# : string 5 fret 7 / String 1 fret 12 - string
F# : string 1 fret 12 / string 7 fret 5

G# : string 8 fret 4 ( yep 4) / string 6 fret 5
G# : string 4 ( yep 4 ) / string 3 fret 5

Eb : string 5 fret 4 / string 2 fret 5

E : string 8 w: A&B fret 5 / string 6 w: A&B fret 7

A : string 6 w: A&B fret 5 / string 3 w: A&B fret 12
A : string 6 w: A&B fret 12 / string 9 fret 7

C# : string 5 w: A&B fret 12 / string 10 w: A&B fret 5
C# : string 6 w: B&C fret 4 / string 4 w: B&C fret 7
C# : string 6 w: B&C fret 4 / string 5 w: B&C fret 5

Eb : string 2 fret 12 / string 4 w lever E fret 12
Eb : string 2 fret 12 / string 8 w: lever E fret 5

B(G# lever): string 5 fret 5 / string 7 w: lever G fret 4
G# : string 3 fret 12 / string 1 w: lever G fret 12

F : string 5 w: A&B fret 4 / string 4 w: lever F fret 5
F : string 4 w: lever F fret 12 / string 8 w: lever F fret 5

Bb : string 7 fret 4 / string 5 w: lever V fret 5
Bb : string 5 w: lever V fret 12 / string 10 w: lever V fret 5

D : string 9 fret 5 / string 2 w: lever D fret 12

If you tune to the SW-E9 presets, you don't need to have pedals down--the preset tunes the Es sharp to compensate for average cabinet drop.

I tune my guitar to the SWT SE9 on the stroboflip with no pedals or knee levers engaged. I was under the impression that the SWT setting took care of cabinet drop issues so that i dont need to tune open strings with pedals down ? I dont think my guitar is ever in perfect tune tho.

Whoa! Thanks CrowBear. I didn't know it was that much to it. To be honest, I've been tuning using the SW E9 like Ray and Karen, and thought that the tuner compensated for the minus's and pluses like Jeff Newman's tuning chart shows. My steel sounds just right to me, after using the SW E9 Jeff Newman tuning. I understand what your saying Crowbear. in order to get my particular guitar tuned like it should be, compensating for cabinet drop, I'd need to tune it like you described. But to be honest, I don't think I got sense enough to tune it that way, and get all the necessary pluses and minuses programed in to the tuner. I'm just a little dense when it comes to stuff like that. Smile
But, sense I have gone back to the older guitars, Sho Bud Pro IIs, I suspect I'd be closer in tune if I tuned them like you explained. Getting the settings programed in to my tuner, would be the stopper. Smile Thanks to all.

Correct Terry

of course you have the sense to do that or you would'nt be playin' such a contraption - yer jes not takin' the Time to sit down w: it
yes, the Newman presets on the peterson get you in good so use 'em
as for tuning by harmonics, take yer time & get into it
you don't have to run through all those harmonics in 1 shot - break it down & go for the roots & fifths first - then go on to another group : 3rds for instance & so on
you'll be surprised how easy it comes together & tuning up can be quick

I use my own programmed settings. There is no "one setting" for all steels.
