Here's Byrd's incredible tone, touch, technique and blocking right out there in the open. The passage where he plays harmonics combined with non-harmonic notes is amazing, as is his blocking on the chromatic scales. For me, his only misstep is the quick I-V-I he plays right at the end which kind of breaks the mood .... sort of like when they tagged an upbeat sitcom Ba-dum-bomp rif onto the poignant theme from the TV show M*A*S*H.

Sounds like a version I also have (Aloha International Convention circa. 1988). Either that or Jerry took to ending this tune with the I-V-I all the time. It is surprising, but what is not surprising is that the rest of that arrangement is a masterpiece.
Jerry worked that arrangement for a long time... I have an early 1970s basement recording of him playing practically the same arrangement on his then new Sho-Bud. So new, in fact, that the tape is actually his home recording of him auditioning the new guitar right out of the case on the day of its arrival.

I think 2 of the " Ho'olaule'a" annual gatherings from the mid 1980s were released on commercial cassette. Audio only, not video.
If I recall correctly, at least one of them may have been a 2 cassette package.
Not sure who released them. Scotty maybe???
I think I still have mine stashed somewhere and never got them transferred to minidisc or PC.
Among the performers I recall--Freddie Tavares, Barney Isaacs, and even Bobby Black--Bobby played "Sand" and "That's The Hawaiian In Me". Maybe Herbert Hanawahine? Numerous other names I can't recall. Jerry used to rave about Herbert's chime technique--"I can't do that!!!".
I should try and dig them out of storage. |

That version of "Malaguena" did not come from the HSGA-produced Ho'olaule'a recordings. It came from Aloha International's convention (which may or may not have been recorded for sale).
The Ho'olaule'a recordings are precious, too. The last one I have is 1985 - Herbert Hanawahine, Freddie Tavares, Barney Isaacs, a very young Casey Olsen, Alan Akaka, and Akira Ozawa (with whom I have had the great pleasure of performing and taking long car rides singing songs in Hawaiian language because I didn't speak Japanese and he didn't speak English).
I have the entire concert from which "Malaguena" came but I am extremely respectful of distributing this music without permissions. If anyone can tell me how to ethically do this, I am most happy to remaster this for the digital age.

Mitch, that '85 show is all I have from those great JB sponsored shows he did from 1980 til...? I think he was ultimatly the producer of any proper A/V that came from them and did release tapes from all he put on. The most coveted would most likely be the first with David Kelii and the cream of the still living crop. And what a show it was with David, Joe Custino, Billy Hew Len, Barney Isaacs, and JB himself. Those shows were done in real style and every performer a class act. I would imagine Scotty has care of them now, and whomever has them I guess after all these years we'll never have another regular shot at them.
Bill, I hope someone contributes a manner in which to share those precious recordings in a way you feel comfortable with. Today's overburdensome legalities hamper cultural learning/sharing to a rediculous degree. Thank god for bootleggers! |
