I am looking for some direction to figure out the lick that is used many times in the Jason Boland song: My Baby Loves me When I'm Stoned (Studio Version). The steel player uses it between almost every line of the verses. I really like the blusey stuff that he plays.
If someone could post some of these types of licks, it would be great.
Thanks,
Tim

Lower your 2nd string a half with the D lever.
Start with plucking 3 and 4 at the 5th fret with fingers,
then do a single note slide down and up on string 5 with the thumb,
then pluck 1 and 2 with the fingers on fret 5.

Keep alternating the thumb single note slide with the fingers on 3/4 then 1/2.
Once you get the flow, try moving it all up to fret 10 then fret 12.
This is my first attempt at posting tab here, hope it makes sense.

Clete

Excellent. I will give it a shot. Your TAB looks just fine.
I can tell that this will take lots of practice to get it right.

Thanks very much for the help!

Tim

I don't know the song, but I saw the steeler playing it on YouTube -- a live recording. I could see he was moving the bar up and down the neck to hit the high notes on strings 3 and 4 (as tabbed below).

This is a pretty common lick. There is a simpler variation of this lick in Haggard's "The Bottle Let me Down" and John Prine's "Your Flag Decal"

Obviously, you have to block the high notes before doing the bar slides. On that 5th string, you pick it once -- and then the other two notes are done with a bar slide or pedal move. The only tricky part is getting the timing of the bar slides down.

I have a Franklin change on P0 lowering 5 a whole step. The same riff can also be done without moving the bar at all using this change.

Tucker,

As I've posted before, there's often one or two other ways to play essentially the same thing. I always learn something on this forum. I just figured my way by ear, but I like your tab better. Thanks! Smile

I happen to be Boland's steel player ... and Tucker's tab is correct. I use that lick a lot because it's the only one I know!

Roger,
Your playing is awesome on that tune!
Thanks for telling us how you did it. Now I need to figure out that really cool chord that you are playing over the IV toward the end of the song. Any possibility that you can share that one?

Also want to thank Clete and Tucker for taking the time to post the TAB. Both were of tremendous help. I often forget to try lowering the second string when noodling around on a lick. I was totally stumped - makes sense now.

Tim

Tim,

I agree!
I saw the Stragglers up in Steamboat, CO at the Texas Music Fest a few years back (I've been going every year from '03), and have been a fan of Jason Boland and Roger Ray ever since.

I think the lick you're talking about is a short little ascending thing that ends up in a dominant 7th chord ... try fiddling around with B pedal down and your E's lowered ... it's in there somewhere ... I probably play it different every night, but I'd be happy to tab whatever I play, if you send me an mp3 ... rogerdaleray@aol.com ... And thanks for the compliment!

Awesome. We don't get it directly from the horse's mouth here very often.

Thanks Roger! I will look for it - as you say, it's in there somewhere. If I can't find it, I will get the clip and post it. I think that we're talking about the same lick - it sounds like it is resolving to the dom 7th.
You have a new fan - me.

You're right, Gary - it IS awesome!

Roger, do you have a tab of your solo on this tune from "Somewhere In The Middle"? Love that solo, working on it, can't quite get it. I was watching like a hawk when you played in CC a couple months ago, but nothing came of it haha, thanks man

I use that lick a lot also. I think I stole it from Mooney's Goodhearted Woman.
