I've always loved electric Django. His playing was fierce. I like Stochelo and this is a great clip. My favorite of all of the cats is Fapy Lafertin who, to me, really captures the essence of Django.
There are so many great players of this style, my favorites being Fapy, Boulou Ferre, Moreno Winterstein (not quite in the Django style, more like Tchan Tchou), Tchan Tchou, Patotte Bousquet, and Matelo Ferret, the last 3 (old-timers) of whom play in a gypsy style that is a little different, maybe less jazzy, but very passionate. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Stochelo Rosenberg and Joscho Stephan are certainly impressive. Their technical skills are amazing but there is a certain sense in their music of waiting for Seabiscuit to make his move and run ahead of the pack. I like Robin Nolan. He's the Paul Desmond of the gypsy jazzers .... takes his time to play very musically instead of just running arpeggios at light speed. Kudos to Rosenberg for this clip however. He just absolutely nails that 1952 electric Django sound.I actually prefer Django's electric period to his Hot Club period with Grappelli - especially his final 1953 Blue Star session where he combines bebop, gypsy jazz and an overall sense of nostalgia and melancholy. |

I really like Frank Vignola's gypsy jazz playing using the obligatory Maccaferri-style guitar. Here's a YouTube of him and Jimmy Rosenberg (is he related to Stochelo Rosenberg?) playing. Notice the uncomfortable, yet hilarious situation with a recording engineer at the beginning of the vid.

And with Joe Ascione:

Keep on pickin'!

I agree with regard to Fapy......particularly his first album being the closest to Django's playing that I've heard...... |
