The subject kinda says it all: What do you consider to be essential recordings of 8-string non-pedal steel work? I'm interested in all kinds of music (except rap & opera!)...

Legends of the Incredible Lap Steel would be a great start. Not just 8 strings, but a wonderful recording.

Gotta add to this list "Four Wheel Drive" by Buddy Emmons.

"Sleepwalk" by Santo and Johny

and maybe, a tune from Tom Morrell's Wolf Tracks album. (I know, 10 strings - but wow)

Even though Buddy Emmons did play a pedal steel on Four Wheel Drive, it's still essential listening for even a non-pedal player, in my opinion.

Here's my list:
Herb Remington - Steel Guitar Holiday
Spade Cooley (Joaquin Murphey on steel) - Dance-O-Rama, Fidoodlin' Fiddodlin' and Live At The Santa Monica Pier
Billy Jack Wills (Vance Terry on steel) - Crazy, man, Crazy and Sacramento 1952-54
Leon McAuliffe - Columbia Historic Edition
Tex Williams and his Western Caravan (with Joaquin Murphey) - so many great records
Tom Morrell and Bobby Koefer (Let's Take a Ride With Bob and Tommy)
Jerry Byrd made some great recordings with 6, 7 and 8 string guitars. I love Hi-Fi Guitar and Admirable Byrd
Bob Wills - The Tiffany Transcriptions
Speedy West is essential listening, whether on non-pedal or pedal.

I'm sure many more will come to mind.

There you go! b0b's set has a lot of gold.

In my haste, I neglected to mention Noel Boggs, who belongs at the top end of the list. Magic Steel Guitar is an excellent record.

Any more 'modern' suggestions?

For modern players, get Jeremy Wakefield: either or both of "Steel Guitar Caviar" and the CD he did with Dave Biller. Not sure what guitar Jeremy played on those 2 CDs---maybe his Bigsby, maybe a Rickenbacker double 8?

Every one of Tom Morrell's 10 or so CDs is worthwhile. Not sure which have just 8 strings.

The gaping hole in your list so far is Hawaiian players, who may have from 6 to 8 strings. Take your pick among Jules Ah See and Billy Hew Len from the 50s/60s or Andy Iona and Dick McIntire from the 30s and 40s. Look for CDs on the Cumquat label out of Australia.

There are a bunch of mp3s available for 99 cents a song or less by "The Polynesians", a studio group of Hawaiian players who made a bunch of LPs for budget labels in the 50s and 60s. Dozens of Hawaiian standards with knockout steel--I think mostly by Bernie Ka'ai or Bob Nichols--who swing as hard as any mainland western swing player.

You can buy several dozen Noel Boggs mp3s online for less than a dollar a pop also.

I second Tom Morrell's stuff. look for "Tom Morrell & the Timewarp Tophands" The "How the West Was Swung" Series.
I have a few of them and each CD's insert has a list of tunings and steels used for each track.
Some great modern western swing there. Jaw droppingly good steel playing on that series of CD's. Do a web search.

For older stuff, I really enjoy Roy Wiggins stuff on the old Eddy Arnold albums. Just great 8 string no pedal. One of my favorites. Definitely a must listen to.

Lots of other early country stuff out there as well. (Heck, just listen to Don Helms on Hank Williams stuff!)

The Roy Wiggins Songbook includes a CD with Roy playing all of those Eddy Arnold classics instrumentally. He was a true master of the 8 string steel guitar. I've been working my way through the book. Each song takes me a couple of hours to learn - this is some really advanced stuff.

When people ask me why I usually play pedal steel, I say, "Because it's easier!". Mr. Green

Now if someone can tell me where to get a cassatte Player? Smile

Seriously: someone sent me some tapes of me playing back in 1981 and have no way of playing them. My cassette players died years ago. Do they even sell them anymore?

I wouldn't call these essential, but they are fun and interesting. Two box sets by Proper; "Boppin' Hillbilly to Red Hot Rockabilly" has alot of different steel players trying out some rockabilly chops. Billy Haley "From Western Swing to Rock" has Billy Williamson playing steel on about 3/4 of the music, before he was push to the back of the mix by the saxaphone.

Friends Of Dean Martinez (with Bill Elm playing an 8-string Fender Stringmaster) - I's start either with their "Wichita Lineman" album, or with their first one "The Shadow Of Your Smile".
Mostly instrumentals, kinda spaghetti western film score-like, desert rock, surf, American - if by any chance you like Calexico, you'll also like the FODM!

Go my copy of Steel Guitar Heroes today, and they are recorded on CrO2 tapes. Make sure you get a player that supports CrO2, which will probably run you a bit more than $50.

That's a lotta suggestions, folks -- enough to keep me listening for a year!

Rhapsody is pretty spotty for older stuff, but I'm already checking out about a dozen CDs' worth of stuff and will definitely be tracking down much of the rest in hard copy...

    Thanks again,
    Mark
