Hi Ron. Your gonna get a lot of different answers as to how to tune your guitar and maybe one of them will work the best for you. First you should tell us what kind of guitar you have and what tuning your using. |

Ron: The Peterson Strobo-Flip tuner is a great device that comes with terrible instructions. I finally figured out some basic moves, and now I find it works really well.
Here's how I tune up my E9 neck using the tuner.
Step One:
Press the On Button. (well duh!!)
Step Two:
Then press the next button to the right labeled:
TMPR/SWT
PROG(+ON)
You may need to press this button more than once as you need to scroll to the tuning method that you want to use. If you want to tune using Just Intonation you will want the sweetened settings. That is what I use and recommend, but others prefer to tune using Equal Temperament. More on that later.
The screen will display the following when you get to the sweetened (Just Intonation) settings:
SWT: PSG=OE9
Step Three:
Once you have the correct screen for the tuning method you want, then you need to press the next button to the right labeled as follows:
Drop/Key
You should only have to press this button once.
You are now ready to tune the steel and should be able to tune all of the open strings and many of the pedal changes using the tuner.
* * *
If you want to tune your steel using Equal Temperament tuning (or to tune a normal guitar or bass), then back at the second step you need to scroll until you see the following screen:
TMPR: EQUAL
When you have that screen displayed, go to step three same as above.
I know the tuner will do much more, but the sweetened settings sound really good to my ear and that mostly what I use. There are two strings on the E9 neck, and a couple pedal changes that I tune by ear, but this should get you started.
Good luck, and don't give up. |

Thanx for the time to write about the tuner Paul I did get to use it yesterday and got it closer to be in tune with open tune and ped. but my C ped just will not tune up. I now feel my problam is under neath because when i turn my end plastic nuts (nothing happens to the ped) but my others ped go back out of tune. I also bought new nuts for it. I may have to take it to a feller here to give it a good tuneup. |

Ron: When you say the C pedal won't tune up properly, can I assume the fourth string raise to F# is the problem? IF that is the case, consider this.
When tuning just intonation (sweetened settings) the F# pitch in the strobo-flip should be ignored. In every instance you should tune that pitch by ear. The two strings that I mentioned that I tune by ear are strings One and Seven, the two F#s. And the one pedal change that I tune by ear is the string four raise from E to F#. There is probably a way to set the tuner to the proper values that I want, but I don't know how to do it.
There are many different opinions about how to tune these F# pitches. I use the following: I tune the first string against the fifth string no pedals, until the beats are gone. I tune the seventh string against the fifth string with the A & B pedals down, until the beats are gone. Then I tune the C pedal raise by tuning the fourth string against the seventh string with the B & C pedals down, until the beats are gone.
The final result is two very different F# pitches on the steel, but they are used in different ways and never at the same time. The first string F# is a little bit sharp from what you would get just using the tuner, and the seventh string open and fourth string raise are both VERY flat from what you would get using the tuner.
Give it a try and see if it helps. |

hi Paul,
I'm mystified by your instruction #3...do you have any idea what pushing the "drop/key" serves in your tuning process. I'm not questioning that you may have found some cool trick with the Stroboflip, but how does it work differently than if you had not pushed it?
Thanks! |

Ross: Your question has caused me to realize a bit more about this Strobo-Flip tuner. If when you turn the device on the screen that comes up is the sweetened E9 setting, AND the strobo lines are flickering on the left half of the screen, you can go straight to tuning the E9 neck. You don't have to do step 2 or 3 that I described. However, if you also want to tune the C6th neck (using the sweetened C6th settings), or tune a guitar or bass or anything else, using equal temperament, then you need to use steps 2 & 3 as I described to be able to scroll between the various tuning systems.
After I have tuned the E9 neck I repress the button described in step two. Then to tune the C6th neck with the sweetened settings I press the down arrow (below the buttons previously described). This takes me to the menu screen for the C6th sweetened. Then I press the step 3 button and tune.
To go from the E9 setting to equal temperament, to tune a guitar or bass or fiddle, etc. I press the step two button twice.
It seems the step two button is the menu selector and the step three button is what activates whatever it is that you selected.
Hope this helps. |
