Why does your steel guitar sound like Wendy Carlos' synthesizer on that song, Mike? |
Bobby, I assume you're referring to the 3rd song in the medley on which I used an E-bow quite extensively. Sometimes on 2 or 3 tracks. Recording an E-bow on 2 separate tracks does not sound the same as using a 2 string E-bow, even if you play the exact same thing.
But my favorite parts of the medley are the 2nd and 4th songs. The 2nd because it's so intense.
The 4th song is just steel(s) bass and drums. No guitars. The first half of the song is played with the 5th position of the 5 way George L pickup. The second half, with the first. This is a good demonstration of the different sounds the pickup can produce. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

No, not just the 3rd song. The whole thing. It doesn't sound much like a steel guitar. It sounds more like a Moog synthesizer. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

I don't know what to say Bobby. There are no keyboards anywhere in the medley. In fact, the only keyboards anywhere on the WSS CD are on a couple of short passages in the Prologue, and the tune entitled "Blues" which features an acoustic piano (played by Jimmy Horowitz.) I used various electric and acoustic guitars and an autoharp, as well as a bunch of effects (including the variable speed oscillator on the tape deck- I have no shame,) but no synths or keyboards.
Maybe this should be one for everybody else to decide.
Come on all you girls and boys out there in forumland, check out the track and give us your opinion. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

As it turns out, Frank Zappa's younger sister is married to one of my oldest friends. If he were still alive she undoubtedly would have brought me to his attention, and I might possibly have been playing with him for the last few years.
But Bill, although I'm glad you like the track, you didn't answer the question. Does my steel sound like a synth to you? _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Hi Mike,
Nice job! Your arrangements are very creative and enjoyable. I thought I would just listen to part of one tune but wound up listening to them all.
To answer the question, to me all the tunes sound like they are 90% synthesizer or MIDI and only 10% steel guitar. That that is actually not so is surprising to me. This must have been a lot of work. The result is something to be proud of!
Best regards,
Joe |

And yet, as I said, there are no MIDI instruments or keyboards of any sort on the track. It's all steel and guitars and basses (fretted and fretless) and autoharp.
I must admit, I'm surprised that you guys think it sounds like a synth. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
