Hmmmm.......sorry if this sounds CRAZY....just trying to learn. If I had a G tuning and I wanted to make it a dom 7th tuning, would it be best if I put the flat7 on the bottom (?-?-F-G-B-D) or on the top (?-?-G-B-D-F)?
Please explain why one over the other. Thanks. |

When you depart from the root position (where all chord tones are in ascending order (G B D F)) you're playing an inversion. You play whatever inversion fits the song at the moment. If you are creating bass movement, then you change the inversion to suit the bass line. For instance, if you have a G chord with a G in the bass and you will be moving to a C chord in the next bar, it's typical to play a G7 with a B in the bass preceding the C chord. This is what's called "voice leading." If you are creating melodic movement in the treble strings, you could put the F on top and then resolve it to E when you change to the C chord.

If you put the 7th in the [i]middle[i] of the tuning, you'd get something like:
B-D-F-G-B-D
It gives you a diminished chord on the bottom.
B-D-F = Bdim
B-F-G = G7/B
B-G-B = G
B-B-D = nc
D-F-G = nc or Dsus4
D-F-B = Bdim/D
D-G-B = G
D-B-D = nc
F-G-B = G7/F
F-B-D = Bdim/F
G-B-D = G
