Do any of the great legendary steel players have any sons or daughters that also play? Rugg, Tharpe, Chalker, Beck, Emmons, Jernigan, Maurice, Speedy, Jimmy Day, Lloyd and a few dozen more.
I have been reading the posts about these young pickers and started wondering. Actually, some of those legends could have grandchildren that might be in the business. Anyone know?
Thanks,
Dave A. Burley

Doesn't Speedy's son play around Oklahoma? I know he is a musician and always thought he played steel. Don't know if he is still active.
I think Rick Garrett of this forum plays as well.
Gabby Pahinui has several sons and I'd bet they have at least dabbled in steel. |

Mommas, don't let your babies grow up to be steelers
Don't let 'em pick D-10s or Universals
Don't let 'em stay up at all night rehearsals
Mommas, don't let your babies grow up to be steelers
Cuz they're never at home and you're always alone
While they pick on something they love. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Neither of my kids play the steel, if that's what you're asking. _________________ HagFan

None of his kids or grandkids has bothered following in those particular footsteps. In fact I can't think of any of the great Hawaiian players whose kids took up steel. And Speedy Jr. was the only one from the continental US that I could think of which has. |

The Sacred Steel great Henry Nelson's son is Sacred Steel great Aubrey Ghent. His son (AJ Ghent Jr.) is a killer, killer lap and pedal steel player. He takes no prisoners.....

The reason why there are so many young Sacred Steel players is that in their church, the steel player gets the girls. In our world, playing steel is pretty much akin to a vow of chastity. |
