I have a cassette tape that Paul Franklin used to sell, where he talks you through it, just like he did it on the record.

William on the start of the song I strike string 5 and 6 with the G# pedal down then while it is ringing I push down the B string pedal. It sounds right to me. Just my 2 cents worth. Ron

Since Paul Franklin played on the record, I would guess he came up with it, maybe from a suggestion from the producer or artist.

Jeff Peterson cut the demo here in Texas. I heard it. There was little or no diffence in the intro after it was recorded in Nashville.

I stand corrected. Probably happens more than I think.

I would like to clarify my first post above stating that I believe Paul Franklin came up with the intro. I remember reading a post some time ago on this same subject.

Excerpts from the original post:

I responded earlier to this post. The more I hash it over and try to recollect, and if memory serves, I believe it was Terry Crisp that came up with the intro; possibly on the demo. When it went to master session for the album, it was Paul that duplicated or embellished it for the album cut. Do I have a good memory or early senility?

Doug,

I don't know where you're getting your information.
I did not copy any steel parts for that song. Instead I came up with the intro and solo at the request of the producer. The producer wanted a dominant steel intro and solo. After we tracked it he wasn't crazy about the way I sounded. He almost made me overdub an alternate intro and solo because he thought my style sounded too retro for the song.

Lucky for me, Brent Rowan, the session guitarist and session leader on that song, asked the producer to live with it awhile before replacing it. He did and the version that made it to the radio has my original steel parts. Thanks Brent!

Terry Crisp has recorded several tracks with Mark over the years. Terry's playing is always brilliant.

This is not meant to discredit anyone. Just something I remember reading on the subject. None the less, It is a great intro and solo and I'm lucky enough to play with someone who sings this song.
