Topic: 65 delux reverb's reverb! |

I just purchased a fender reissue Delux Reverb and am happy with the sound except the reverb.
Any ideas on how to improve it. It seems to have to much mid range and its not sweet sounding like the real black face fenders.
Any ideas? |

I have the same amp and agree the reverb sucks. I verified that mine has the correct tank and checked out all the tubes, plates voltages etc and based on reviews I've read, that's the way it works on the reissue. Very metallic sounding. Since tube circuits are pretty authentic, perhaps an orginal vintage tank would improve the sound.
Happily I have gone to using external reverbs like the Boss RV-5, Digitech RV-7 and Lexicon MPX-1 which I think sound much better than any tube amp reverb I've had including the original 1968 Deluxe Reverb I started with.

Can't give you the links but this has been discussed at length several times with various suggestions. I have the Deluxe RI with the same complaint as you. The amp is good but the reverb not so good. I did notice a small improvement switching out the reverb recovery tube to a 12AY7 as had been suggested. The problem is not so bad when you play a loud job because the natural room echo comes into play, but at home it is pretty obnoxious.

I was comparing the Delux to my 64 vibrolux and noticed that the reverb in the vibrolux was reacting to me walking across the floor. The reissue did not.
It made me wonder if the springs were too stiff or thick in the delux. Any ideas on where to find reverb springs? |

Gary, I don't think thats the problem. I tried several reverb pans in mine with no appreciable change. I think its in the circuitry. If you can locate the other threads, there were many suggestions from something simple as tube changes to changing out transformers. I'm just waiting to find an older Deluxe and send it to Ken Fox.

Gary, do you have the option of returning it for another? The first DRRI I brought home had awful reverb. Splashy, harsh, mid-rangy. I brought it back and took another one home. The second one had great reverb. I do believe there are lemons and diamonds (is that an actual saying?) when it comes to these amps, particularly in the reverb department. If you have the option of returning it for a swap, give it a try. Otherwise, a high-quality tube might warm it up a bit.
As far as the reverb in your Vibrolux being picked up by your footsteps, this sometimes happens if the bag is not attached properly to the bottom of the amp, or something like that. My Session 400 reverb doesn't have a bag, and you can't even breathe on it without the 'verb crashing.

| You should pull out the reverb pan, and check that one of the springs hasn't come unhooked. Also see that there isn't anything physically interefering with the springs, stopping them from vibrating properly. |

Great advice. The amp sounds exellent except the reverb. I have 30 days to return it. It was factory unsealed and I got it for a very good price. I am going to use it this weekend and decide what to do.
I may try the tank from my vibrolux and see what happens. |

Ya, just put the amps back to back and take the RCA plugs from the Vibrolux's reverb and plug them into the Deluxe.

| I own a DRRI and the reverb sounds great. Switched my tube to a Ruby 12AU7 and it really tames it, so you can put it above 2 on the knob. Better than any pedal I've used. |

I ran the wires from my old vibrolux to hear it through a vintage tank and it was a little better but I will try switching out the tube as suggested.
Hopefully it will work for me also. |

| I stopped using tank reverbs when I got my RP 150. The sound enhancement one gets with the Lexicon Reverbs is stunning. I have my program 1 set to reverb only and that is what I use most of the time. There is no spring reverb on the market that sounds as good. (IMHO) If you get a chance just try one out on your amp and I am sure you will hear the difference. |

I agree, I hear lots of Fender Reverbs in amps I restore and none sound to me as good as I thought they used to when I was younger!!
I am building a new tube reverb based on the Premier 90. The prototype just smokes any spring reverb I have ever heard. Has a hall like decay due to the unique circuit Premier used, a recirculating reverb circuit. Part of the tanks output is fed back to the input for a natural decay. Same tank a Fender uses but compared to a Fender a totally different reverb sound. |

Up until about 5 years ago, I was a spring reverb guy. Had to have it, no matta what. But lately, I've changed my preferences. I think the digital effects just got so darn good, I prefer them now. Besides, I don't miss playing on a flexible stage where someone jumped up and down and the springs rattled. The reverb on my amps is mostly off now.

However, I play through old Fender amps exclusively. They sound even better. Maybe it's because that's the sound I grew up with.

On BF/SF Fenders, you can replace the 1 meg resistor in the reverb circuit with a 1M-A pot for a dwell control. Might be very hard to do on a PCB DRRI but worth a shot. That, along with a 3-spring tank gives a very nice, smooth reverb.
