I have had a booth for Classic Country and Bluegrss in Nashville's Convention Center at the Fan Fair for ten years. They turned me down this year. Why? Kris Kennedy, who handles the exhibitors at the Convention Center during Fan Fair/Music Festival, claims she needs my 5 spaces for a 'corporate sponsor.' Classic Country is quickly being eliminated from the yearly country music celebration. I wonder how many of those rock/country stars or corporate sponsors are responsible for Nashville being titled 'Music City USA.'
Another goodie....When I called the CMA in March to take care of getting the booth, the phone was answered by a young man. We talked for awhile and got around to what kind of booth I had. I told him about some country legends appearing in the booth. I mentioned Kitty Wells to him and his reply..."I don't think I ever heard of her."
Can you imagine...representing the Country Music Association and not knowing who Kitty Wells is.
What really killed me is when I discovered that the gal that takes care of the CMA president's calls and emails had never heard of Faron Young. Yea, I had John Hughey and Don Helms in the booth one year but I guess I would have had to go to some other organization beside's the CMA to find anyone that might know who they were. Shame, shame, shame, shame on the CMA.

It ought to be a crime for anyone who claims to be in country music to not know who Kitty Wells is. It's kind of like a politican not knowing who George Washington was.
I can't wait to see Charles Davidson's reply to this.

I think a venue such as Fan Fair should be moved to Branson, where Country Music still is recognizable as the conerstone of todays so called "Country Music"I'm sure if Bob Wills or Jimmy Wakely, Johnny Horton,Marty Robbins & some of the oldsters were alive today they would be be shaking their heads shaming Nashville.

Why? There's no money in it. Face it: most of the fans of contemporary country don't CARE who Kitty Wells is. If she's older than Taylor Swift she doesn't have a chance anyway.

You can bet they know detailed biographies for Kenny Cheesy or Toby Keith. You gotta realize: they don't even think of ET or Ray Price as COUNTRY. You can't dance to it if you really don't know how to dance. Rolling Eyes

The CMA phone number is: 615-244-2840. A phone call to that number will show you just how out of touch they are with country music. Ask them about Webb Pierce, Ferlin Husky and any other of the CMA Hall Of Fame members from that era.
Steve Moore, the new president of the CMA, is a trumpet player with a background of promoting acts such as ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He is a rock concert promoter. Too much money now. Check the board of directors and you will find that most of them are not involved in country music today. One of the few names you will recognize is Earl Scruggs boy.
Once again................Shame, shame, shame, shame.

A kid starting college today was born in 1992. Country music had already changed to R'n'R by then.
No wonder they don't know anything about country.

To my ears the only thing distinguishing modern "country" music from rock is a Southern drawl in the vocals and some occasional common-folk lyrical content.

Sad Dom

This is a tragedy. At first they take the real country music away and now the fan fare as well. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in todays music and church music is included. Two weeks ago I watched the live segment of the Grand Ole Opry. It was terrible IMHO. I remember Justin Tubb singing the song "What's Wrong With The Way We're Doing It Now" several years ago. Man was he right. Someome stated it is all about the dollar bill or in this case a bunch of them. Murder has been committed for sure.

Not sure if you know, but all four of those were "west coast" artist that pretty much stayed away from Nashville. Marty was the only one that spent a good portion of his career there(even though he started in Arizona and California), Bob Wills threatened to walk of the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and didn't care much for the town, Jimmy Wakely spent some 30 years doing a radio show in Hollywood, and Johnny Horton(born in Los Angeles) was a member of the Louisiana Hayride. They were shaking their heads at Nashville even back when they were alive.

Smile Alvin I think they were mostly put off by the old Nashville clique that shunned any musical change including the jazz influences from Bob Wills, the awesome, but totally to "hip" for the times, lead on Don't Worry bout Me from Marty. Now I've always been embracing of musical cahnge and evolement but NOT at the sake of dismissing/disregarding the real pioneers of country (and western)hehe music in both inception and evolvement.Cause that's just WRONG imho. Oh Well

With all of the rain in Nashville and the possibility of it getting up as far as 5th and Broadway where the Convention Center is located.............They might have to go back out to the fairgrounds this yearfor theri Fan Faor and might lose a lot of their exhibitors. Wouldn't that be a twist...The CMA calling me and begging me to have a booth for Classic Country again this year after kicking me out.
Wishful thinking,
Dave A. Burley
