We started a rainy, cool Saturday by driving out to Lebanon for the Fiddlers Grove Fair, but we were too early for anything but donuts. Gotta say that downtown Lebanon wasn’t as charming as Franklin. Sure, there was a cool statue of a Col. Hatton in town square but it was surrounded by an asphalt parking lot. I know, you have to do what you have to do to get shoppers to come downtown but a little bit of grass would have been nice.
We stopped at Mona’s Café in Smyrna for a sandwich and then on the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum where we met with Fo Bro Robert Kramer. Bob is a great guy and a real historian of country music. We got to see Buddie’s old Sho-Bud,
the Williams family exhibit and of course the Hall itself.
Saturday night we decided to try something a little different and go to the Wildhorse Saloon. I don’t know what I was expecting but what we got was a cover charge (only $5 but unheard of elsewhere), a band with no steel, overpriced drinks, most of the club closed, and a dance floor full of mostly youngish line dancers. By contrast, in the clubs on Lower Broad I saw people of all ages, some even in wheel chairs, all the time. Anyway, we beat it out of there and stopped off at Robert’s to buy Wayne Dahl a beer– another great player. I wanted to say hello to Mike Sweeney at The Wheel but a couple of drunks kept crashing into our table and I was getting a funny vibe, so we didn’t stay a whole set. Sorry Mike – maybe next time, my loss.
By now, 2 nights of my brother’s snoring and the near-constant consumption of beer, food and cigars is starting to catch up with me…
