What pickup are you using, Dave ?
It looks like a GeorgeL, but sounds more like a single-coil. |

Richard, George L 10-1. Nothing else. Gary Carpenter wanted me to try out the 705's he fitted to the guitar and after one day home from Dallas, I unsoldered them and put in the George L's. I knew something wern't quite right when I played the guitar in the Rains room in Dallas in March. The GL's just suit me, and the way I pick, and 705's are TOO hot for electronic pedals in my opinion. I love GL's, I record with NO EQ, direct from the steel, through the TELONICS pedal and into the MAC. I just add a little compression and SPACE DESIGNER reverb with tweeks within that reverb plug in. Also, getting a new steel is like getting a new car, you have to learn how to drive it, and its taken a month to get the feel of the pedals, knee levers and the different sound of a D-10. Dont tell me why they sound different, but they do, even though its a Rains. The more I play it, the more I love it. And I will work something out on the C neck soon. But NOT before the steel meeting. Hope to see you next week at JD's steel meeting, and you JIMMY too (mines a lager!). The sho-bud is a different story, I cant get on with the re-wound original PUP. I can see me fitting a GL to that soon, (which is a bit fiddly as there's not a lot of room). Regards, David |

Thanks for the info Dave.
I can't get anywhere near a decent tone if I plug my steel straight into the computer, even with a Korg Pandora in the line.
I have to go through my regular setup (delay pedal and amp), and take a line out from the amp to the computer.
I am impressed by the GL 10-1, it's going on my shopping list
I just wish that Dave's talent could be acquired so easily |

Ok Jimmy, you're right, I'll have
I can get a REALLY good price if a few of us at the meeting want GL PUPS.. from Fred Justice.. Myself and Mark Dunn ordered 4 x GL's from him and picked them up in Dallas and I am sure he would offer me a similar deal with a bit of p&p on top.. Remember Richard, it aint just the PU that will make your steel sound like mine. I honestly think its the way the PU is mounted to the alloy neck that is the Rains secret to sustain and sound. Bright long sustaining input from the strings to the PU which is suspended from the alloy neck and doesnt touch the body of the guitar at all. Mellowed down with a smoother warm sounding PUP. Thats my theory and thats why I like the Rains/GL combination. And don't forget, TELONICS (Mullen)are undoubtedly the finest electronic pedal you can get. This is fact, and not just my opinion. Quite expensive but I have been told they are built with the finest electronics available, and this is the most important part of the signal chain from the guitar to the amp/recorder. I love sound and the look of the Justice steel too. Very similar in construction.
Leaving for Sheffield now to watch the world snooker semi-final 2. Look out for me on telly tonight, 3 rows back somewhere near one of the players chairs. |

I watched the semi's' ( recorded it on the DVD ) but failed to spot you even when in slo-mo. Too dark past the first row for the camera. Good match, looking forward to the final. |

Fran wanted a copy of the DVD of this semi if possible as a keepsake. Is it possible she could have one? |
