I usually don't get involved in these types of conversations but, I would like to announce to the Steel Guitar community that I have nominated Sonny Curtis for the steel guitar hall of fame. This announcement was made as well at the Ohio SGA jam yesterday with Sonny in attendance. I have for the most part been able to keep this under my hat with the exception of a few friends that knew. Sonny has more than enough credentials to be inducted whether it was his time with the greatest country singer of all time,George Jones, and later Tammy Wynette, the countless folks he inspired and helped locally through his music store, his partnership with Jim Clark to form the Clark Guitar Company, or the countless recording sessions. I'm not very good at formal writing and only hope that I gave the HOF board everything that they are looking for in a nomination letter. It is in thier hands now. There are few folks with these kinds of credentials behind them.

You can read more about Sonny at www.sonnycurtis.net .

Sonny Curtis is a great steel guitar player ( even if he does play backwards ) and a great human being also . This man is so humble when it comes to something like this . I am proud to call Sonny a close friend of mine and he was the first member to join the Ohio Steel Guitar Association . This man should have been in the Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame a long time ago . What is the committee that votes players in the HOF thinking anyway ? Sonny you have my vote ! Gary Preston ( President The Ohio Steel Guitar Association ) .

As a member of the HOF Board, I can't discuss what the other six Board members are thinking because I don't know, and I can't discuss the meeting or voting procedures of the committee, but I can tell you what I'm thinking.

I'm thinking that each year the HOF only inducts 2 and occasionally at the most 3 players each year that are deemed deserving by a majority vote of the committee, which is infrequently unanamimous.

And I'm also thinking that each year I read on the Forum or hear from the fans of all the deserving players nominated previously and still on the list, as well as the fans of deserving players just nominated.

And I'm reflecting on the fact that many of these fans and supporters simply question my judgement, like Gary did just now, while others question my intelligence and a few even question my personal integrity, because their hero hasn't been inducted yet, even when he's just been nominated. And they do it publicly here on the Forum.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. And I'm thinking it's a good thing that I don't let things I read on the Forum affect my opinions about the deserving players that are nominated when it's voting time, only about the fans who make their opinions of me public commentary.

Gary,
There is a long list of players who could (and do) get mentioned every time this subject comes up. One thing to keep in mind is that the HOF can only vote on a player who has been formally nominated; a posting here on the forum doesn't count. And the nomination process isn't trivial -- it takes a lot of work. Dustin has apparently now done that for Sonny and his efforts are to be commended. I have no idea whether Sonny has ever been formally nominated in the past but, if not, that could be one explanation why he hasn't been previously selected for the HOF.

One lesson to be taken from all this is: if you feel strongly that a certain player should be in the HOF, don't just sit around and gripe about it on this forum. Make sure that player has been nominated and, if not, do it yourself.

One question for Herb: once a player has been nominated, does he/she stay under consideration in succeeding years if not elected?

Jeff, that is a great question. I have a personal favorite, a player who I know has all the credentials and a very impressive resume, but for some reason has not been selected. I'm pretty sure he has been nominated, but I guess I need to find out. I was fortunate to spend some time with Herb in Dallas, and started to ask, but really didn't want to impose at the time.

Herb, if you get a minute, send me a pm.

Thanks,
Jim

The answer is yes, the previously nominated are still in consideration.

I am no longer the secretary of the HOF Convention Board, only a voting member. You should contact Scotty with your question.

Herb i had no intentions of offending you at all so forgive me if i did . I know Dustin and know also he among others believe that Sonny and others should be inducted into the H.O.F. I am sure you know Mr. Curtis and now that Dustin has appealed to you ( the board ) to induct him into the H.O.F. let Dustin know how to go about doing this thing right ! I don't know how many players have been inducted into the H.O.F. in past years and also i don't know how many years the H.O.F. has existed . Sure others think some of their friends should be looked at and thats where we are here in Ohio . I hope that i have cleared the air !

Gary,

I've just read the same things on here that everyone else has. Herb would certainly be more qualified to give insight into the process if he wishes, and you can also search the forum for past threads that discuss the process in depth.

Meanwhile, here is the official page that contains instructions and the format/questions to be used for nominating someone to the HOF:

I've seen this go on for years and I'm thru with trying to promote my favorites and Critizing the HOF and The Convention,

Its not in the best interest of anybody to have these public Discussions.

I have one Suggestion and That is the living members of the HOF be given a vote also. It would be more of an Honor to be elected by one's Peers.

I second the motion on Sonny Curtis. Sonny and I go back to 1957, when he played with a band in Ohio. He was the first pedal steel player that I heard in person. I respect him very much. A friend, Dave Thornhill

Wow ! I guess I should read the forum more....LOL ! I have done my best with Sonny's nomination. The man is walking history. It was never my intention to start a firestorm of controversy, I just want my friend to be rightfully placed (my opinion) in the HOF. Sonny is so humble when it comes to his historic past with George and Tammy, and that's only part of the story. He should really write a book ! I am fortunate to have gotten to know him !
