"It's Now or Never"... or if you prefer, 'O Sole Mio.
----> CLICK
I recorded this clip on a little 3" ipod nano w/video camera and mic built in. After much experimenting with amp placement, recorder placement, volume levels, etc, I've come to the conclusion that the ipod mic is not really capable of recording satisfactory live audio. A guitar amp (at low to moderate volume) will overload the mic slightly at certain frequencies. And if the amp's volume is set below the ipod's distortion threshold, the steel sounds weak in the video clip.
Youtube adds compression to the clips, which tends to further distort any hot spots in the audio. It's a little frustrating because I have a clean steel sound in the room. I just need a better video recorder! _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Well, you've gone and done it once again.
You've answered the question raised by another post a few weeks back about playing other than country songs on steel guitar.
Great job! Well done!
What make guitar is that? Couldn't tell from the angle and not that familiar with anything other than Fenders, Gibsons and Ric's.
Was it a ROLA Speaker? What diameter, if you don't mind sharing. |

Doug,
I like the tone that you are getting. That familiar melody still catches me off guard - meaning that it has endured through the test of time. There is little, if any room, for improvement in your performance of that wonderful melodic rendition. A credit to your musical studies on the '57 Vaco Lap Steel. Sounds great! |

I have the same comments as I had with your previous posting. Great playing, with some distortion from your system, which you've addressed in your comments. |

Déjà lu.
As always, great playing, Doug. Your *demo* videos--as opposed to studio recordings--are some of the best lap steel stuff on YouTube. Your tab book and cds have been well worth the money. I don't go to YouTube expecting hi-fidelity. For me, it's your playing that shines through. Glad to see your other videos back up, too. _________________ ...but you are the music / while the music lasts (TS Eliot) |

Excellent rendition. I would echo what others here have said, and add that it sounds very IN tune, not always as common as it should be with the steel. |

Great playing Doug. Very melodic too....and maybe C6 tuning just lends itself to melodies better too?? I may have to give this C6 a try.
Just curious....what's the length and diameter of your bullet bar? |

I think so. C6 has a lot of 3rds and it offers several convenient slants, harmonies, major and minor chords, etc. It’s voiced fairly high, and IMO it’s very good for band work. It doesn’t have the low end growl of some other tunings, like E with a power chord (root, 5) on the bottom. Some players prefer a tuning with wider intervals, more lows. For the style I like to play C6 works best for me.

I use a Dunlop #918, "Jerry Byrd Bar", 3/4" x 2 15/16", 5.5 oz. It feels just right to me for slants and quick bar movements. For slower songs with rolling vibrato I think this bar is a bit on the light side. For that style of playing I have to press down on this bar quite a bit to get the sound I’m looking for. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Doug do you find it is important for you to use a slide that is exactly 2 15/16" long? I saw that there are 918 models that are 3 1/16" and wondering if that might be nice to cover a wider distance. I am just starting out and curious.
thanks,
Chris |

Thanks a lot, Doug. Now I'm going to be humming that song all day....
Nice rendition, great tone. That's a good tune for 6-string C6th. |
