I'm still a newbie but I'm really enjoying playing my lap steel. It's in C6 and is one of those beginner Rogue/Artisan and whatever other number of brands they go by. I figured that with minimal outlay, I could test the waters and see how I got on.

I simply haven't got the room for a pedal steel, so now I'm looking to move up the lap steel ladder and am looking at 10 or 12 strings for more chordal possibilities. I don't mind a lot of strings as I play 7 and 9 string basses already and I'm quite willing to put in the work required to be able to play it well.

I've had a look around and there doesn't seem to be too many 10 or 12 strings around and those that are, the MSA Superslide for example, are way to expensive. I've looked at the wonderful e-Harp as well, but pennies are tight and that's out of range as well.

I could try to build one, but can't find where I could buy a 10 or 12 string keyhead?

I can take my time about this as I still have to weight up the 10 string E9 against a 12 string universal, but I like reasearch so that's not a chore.

If anyone has any suggestions on makes/models of 10 or 12 string lap steel. I'd love to hear them.

As always, all replies greatly appreciated.

Clinesmith and Rains both make a 10st lap steel.

Money being as issue, I've made a 12 srting lap, for myself for under $75. Can't stand up to the pro models, but, it's my first, and it stays in tune.
I used "zither pins", instead of a keyhead, and bought a used 'pup" from someone the forum. The nut and tailpiece I got from BSG guitars,(practice board)
& fret board from Tom Bradshaw.
Good luck & have fun

What a great idea!

Never heard of Zither pins before now (hardly knew what a Zither was to be honest) and they're definitely the way to go.

I'll let you know how I get on.

I have a concert zither, and it's full of those pins! Very Happy
