Did anyone else think that Randle played great and had a good mix on the ACM awards. I couldn't tell what steel he was playing he has several that he uses. Last time I saw him live he played his Franklin. _________________ A couple of guitars

Only one brief wide shot that I saw. I couldn't see what guitar he was playing, but he was up in the mix and sounded great like always. The camera was following a wireless Brad roaming the aisles out in the crowd during Randle's solo. |

I was squinting to see if they would get a camera shot of my old guitar. Was disappointed they never showed Randle's solo. Interesting story on it. I was playing a D-10 Franklin and wanted an SD-10 for the road. I located one of the first ones in mint condition and took it out. Shortly after, someone offered to buy my old D-10. I sold it, planning on getting a newer one. Donnie LaValley who used to play for Reba ordered that Burgundy D-10. I saw it as it was being built and fell in love with the color. After Donnie had it for about a year or so, he got off the road and was looking for an SD-10, so we ended up swapping. I played that guitar on the road for a few years. In 1996 I got with Bryan White and played 245 days in 11 months. After that many dates with no C6th licks, I decided to get a Zum SD-10. Randle loved the Franklin, so I sold it to him planning to get another. I stayed without a D-10 for the next 13 years. I have owned 4 Franklin's and Randle's guitar was the best sounding out of all of them. I wish I had kept it.

When I met Randle in '99 he was playing the Burgandy Franklin with L710s. I had the chance to sit in on that steel down at Barbara's and it indeed is a great sounding steel! He's had a black one since and then the MSA for awhile. Glad he's back to the Franklin. Is it the Burgandy again though? Brett? |

Hey Joe,
I didn't realize Randle bought your Franklin. I love hearing those stories from the players.
Great seeing you in Dallas, sorry I missed your set.
Anyway, Randle sounded great on ACM's and to bad Brad had to go in the audience while Randle was taking the break. Regardless, we heard him just fine! |

Randle is the best thing about Paisley's band. I get so tired of Brad's playing and some of his songs are good, but most are crap (I'm speaking mostly about the words, the content- musically they are OK). Watching Brad on the awards show made me want to puke. Randle is the only reason I bother to watch Brad any more.
I'm glad to see him back on the Franklin. The paisley MSA was way over the top, and truthfully, I can't hear much difference between the different brands now adays. Randle is going to sound great and sound like Randle on any guitar. Randle is surely one of the best. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Hey Doug, I was in touch with Randle through email for a little while. His Franklin wasn't really burgundy, it's a plum-colored guitar. He said the lights onstage make the Franklin look like it's different colors onstage.

I went back on my DVR and watched the performance again and he's playing his Franklin for sure. There is a point where you can see the logo clearly. It's a shame that during his solo section the camera's are on Brad walking around in the audience. _________________ A couple of guitars

Theresa,
I think all steel players have a story about "the one that got away". That particular burgundy Franklin was what I regard as the one that got away.
I think I have a few TV spots of it that I can post on Youtube when I get home in a week. I remember one in particular with Paulette Carlson where my TV tone was better than 99% of the other spots I had ever done on TNN.
Speaking of TNN, I would like to publicly thank the steel player who gave me the wonderful tip about TNN TV tone. I used to always wonder why I worked so hard to get a good tone on that set, yet you could never hear it come across on TV. I was told to play really soft during the afternoon sound check, then crank it up louder than normal during the show, and it would cut through the mix. Seems the engineers at that time worked diligently on the mixing board during sound check, yet didn't touch what wasn't broken come showtime. The good news, is it worked beautifully. The bad news, is I cannot remember who gave me that wonderful tip.
Hated that you missed our performing in Dallas....maybe you and Gregg can come to the Mississippi show in June ???

Does anyone actually play their stage volume at sound check.?
I can't say Tommy White came up with the idea. But he knew how to get-er done come show time. He always sounded great no matter the guitar and was almost always loud enough. And as I remember. Mike Johnson was pretty strong in the mix on the TNN things he did.
Now to get back on topic. Gotta love Randle and those Franklin guitars. |
