I got a surprise package in the mail today ... a large brown envelope with no return address ... in it was an 11x17" penciled portrait of me at my steel (obviously taken from my photo that's in the Copedent section of the Forum). Here's a scan of the portrait beside the photo that I'm sure it was drawn from ...
... there was only a note that said, "Sorry, meant to send this a long time ago. Hope you like it. Love your playing and you were always our favorite on the Ty stage. Just wanted to say thanks for all your music. We really missed you after you left the group. Ty's band was never the same again. Hope you're well and doing good. Sincerely, John & Family."
Wow, what a very nice gesture, but the note had no full signature. Only "John & Family" and a signature on the drawing but I can't make out the last name. The date by the signature is 4/16/05, so this was done 5 years after I left Ty's band.
If the artist is a forumite and you happen to read this, Thank You very much for the drawing and the kind note.  I sincerely appreciate it.

Wow Jim, that's a nice surprise! A compliment of the highest order.
The drawing is a close rendition and very nicely detailed. The artist obviously knows his stuff.

Hi, Bent ... thanks a lot. That was a very nice gesture on the part of the artist.
Thanks for the "legend" sentiment, but I'm thinking the only thing that might be remotely legendary about me is my love for hamburgers! I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today!

Ransom, my wife used to like to joke that she was a legend in her own mind. I used to like to reply, "If you're a Legend, does that mean I can trade you in on a new Accord?" 
Chris ... so true. That's the first time I've ever been "penciled in" and I think I like the drawing better than the photo.

Last time Jim and I went to a mexican reataurant he ordered a hamburger...ola..lol! The picture is great but not totally accurate. He needs a hamburger holder on his guitar.

Nope, I've actually never found out who it was that sent the drawing to me. I guess it'll remain one of those pleasant little mysteries. But, whoever sent it, it was surely a nice gesture.

| I agree, a great tribute. One question is, steel playing artist or fan? If you observe the left hand, the thumb and index finger are in a more flattened position (holding the bar) than in the photo. Also, the right hand is positioned over the C6th neck as opposed to the E9th. The changer and the pickup are melded (I think that's a word) together, and the cutouts are differently shaped rectangles. Yet the artist has nailed the Mullen logo to a T. I say, Watson, the mystery deepens... |
