I think there was a "Fuzzy" steel, that, was the predecessor to the "Excel" steel of today. I think it was Mitsuo Fuji's first attempt at a marketable steel. But, don't quote me on that! |

Hi Nic, Excel steel guitars are still being made in Japan, and beleive me, he makes great instruments.
His Excel "Superb" model is probabley the best keyless steel guitar available today. Norm Hamlet played Excel for many years, as did Doug Jernigan.
Do you ever meet up with my ole buddy Sez Adamson?
I guess he was the first pedal steel player in SA.
When I lived in JHB there was only Sez and Paul Krief playing steel.
Best Regards and keep pumping out those great CDs

Hi Ted,
Thanks for the info on the Excel.
Sez is coming down to Cape Town soon, and we are getting together to chat and play a bit.
Paul has stopped and started a few times.....haven't heard from him in ages.....guess he went back to his aerial photography.
I was always down in Cape Town.....we all sort of started at the same time. _________________ 1970 P/P Emmons D10 flatback 8x5, BJS Bar, J F picks, Peavey Session 500, Telonics pedal. Boss GX700 effects.

Have to agree with Ted about EXCEL-the very best keyless steel on the market in my opinion. And the only one with the 25 1/2" scale and the mechanical design of the changer with more than twice the available changes (raises and lowers) than any on the market. My unit has a six raise and four lower capability. Mine is over five years old and the newer changers are improved even over that capability and design. Should a player be in a habit of continuously tuning his steel, you will loose that habit with the EXCEL. In the five years I have been playing this steel, no adjustments of any type have had to be made to the carriage underneath-NONE.
Glad to see the interest in Mitsuo Fujii's EXCELS. Thanks.

I plugged in the Pro-Co Rat last night but couldn't get a good sound
Does anyone use these for fuzz/distortion? Any favourite settings? |

Hey Jeremy,
THis is off topic, post as a seperate post in electronics.
The Rat (and any other fuzz) sounds like crap with the pedal steel (IMNSHO) |

the rat isnt a fuzz, it's a distortion and sneaky pete sounded killer with a fuzz (bosstone).
I dont know what version of the rat you have but the "filter" or tone knob sometimes works in reverse.
Some versions of the rat are better than others. i havent tried one on steel but I see no reason it couldnt yeild a good tone. IMNSHO
