I received a D8 in excellent condition the other week. I noticed something a couple days ago when I moved it from one location to another. I picked it up at the ends - head and bridge. When I did the legs toed inward slightly. If I picked it up by the front and rear the legs spread again.
I want to make sure before digging, but I'm going to venture to guess the diamond plates have something to do with covering up how the two necks are connected. My guess is if I remove the diamond plates I'll find bolts on one end and a screw head or something on the other. And it's this I have to tighten.
Is this correct? If not, how are the necks connected and what do I have to do to keep them from becoming more loose?
Thank much!

That's correct Anthony. The necks are bolted together. Maybe someone who has done some restoration on a Stringmaster will chime in with more info than I have. Before you do that, are you sure it isn't just he slop in the threads of the legs at the socket joint that is causing them to move a bit? They *are* rather coarse threads after all. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

Anthony,
Yes, under the diamond plates you'll find allen head bolt fasteners. I have a Stringmaster 4-neck & the same problem of necks being loose was very evident. I think the allen head end was on the player's side on my 4-neck--the diamond plates front & player's side allows access to the rod/bolt fasteners. My Stringmaster used to be my Dad's, he bought it new around 1957--I'm sure that when I tightened the rod/bolt fasteners recently, it was the first time it was ever done since 1957!
Good luck & enjoy that great Stringmaster!

The legs were checked and no slop. I also confirmed there was something going on between the necks by looking through the tiny space between them. You could see light variations when lifting and setting down.
I removed the two front plates and found the allen heads. They are 3/16" and were loose. I tighten them and all is better now.
Thanks to everyone who responded!

My Fender Stringmaster T-8 had some weird overtones and vibrations that were amplified by the pickups until I tightened up the necks a tad. |

I had the same problem with loose necks on my D8. A lot of them must be like that. Easy fix, once you know what to look for...Jerry |

I would think that the wood shrinks a bit after a number of years, making the tension on the thru-bolts a bit less.
Good to hear you have it tightened up!! |
