I've been playing pedal guitar for about a year now. I started out with a 5 and 4. The 5 more or less standard pedals. RKL C to B, LKL C to C#, LKL G to F and LKR A to Bb. And of course I have the chromatic D note on top rather than the high G. I've determined that I want to add an A to Ab lever. But I really want to keep the G to F. I use it quite a bit. I'm down to the following choices......

1. Left Vertical

2. a second RKL

3. a second LKL

I can certainly imagine using the A to Ab and the G to F together. I'd appreciate any advice y'all can offer.

I have the exact same changes as you have, but in these positions:
C-B RKL
C-C# RKR
A-Bb LKL
A-Ab LKR
G-F LKV

Ideally, adding a lever would be the best way to do it. LKV is a good place for it, because you can easily combine it with any other lever or pedal. I wouldn't add a second LKL, LKR, RKL or RKR unless I already had a vertical.

But if you don't want to do that, your other option is to sacrifice one of the pedals for that change. If you do that, you probably would use the first pedal (the one that raises both A's to B). Some players use that change a lot, while others don't.

You could put the A to Ab lower on the pedal. Or you could put that change where you've got your G to F lower now, and then move the G to F lower to the pedal. (I've got that on one of my guitars). It would require using two feet on the pedals sometimes, but people do it. I've got the G to F lower on P4 (your P1) on one of my guitars (because it's just 8&5) and I don't like having to move my left foot over to P4, and then move my right foot to P6 (your P3), when I need that combination. But it can be done smoothly...watch at 2:34

Of course it's up to you, but in my opinion, the A to Ab lower works better on a pedal rather than the G to F lower.

Ive just started playing C6 recently. My Carter D10 8X7 is setup with center levers as 4X4 on C6. Heres my copedent:

Im curious about adding an A-Ab change too.

Ive never used staggered levers, so I think a vertical would be more comfortable for me if on a lever.

The pedal you are missing is pedal number one. It raises both A strings up to B. Most people find little or no use for it. So far I'm not using it. But with the little experience I have on pedal guitar, I'm not ready to get rid of it, yet. I'm only going to play C6. I'm betting I'll find a use for it eventually.

Interesting, Herb. Bobby Black has the setup I'm going to end up with. I'll bet he got to it the same way. Bought a guitar with the G to F change and decided he needed the Ab later. If I had it to do over, I'd do it your way. I wonder what the difference in work and expense would be to change the G to F to an A to Ab and then add the G to F onto the vertical lever.

If you have an all-pull guitar, probably very little hassle in making the changes. If you have a PP Emmons, it's more involved and time-consuming, since one bellcrank has rods for both raises and lowers, but it can be done without too much headache by someone familiar with the Emmons undercarriage.

The A-Ab would work fine on a Vertical IMO. I mostly use it in conjuntion with pedal(s) 5 & 6. They should be right underneith the VKL? I myself put the standard pedal 4 ( A-B raises) on a half-stop KL with the A-Bb's, which if you can get it to work correctly (i.e. timing the pulls and string gauges etc.)is one of the coolest changes that I have. That would free up pedal 4 for the G-F lower and the low C-D raise. (a GREAT change!)

I love hearing about guys expanding on C6!

I have a Carter. Probably real easy. I appreciate the thoughts, Rick. But I'm just beginning on pedals. I'm not ready to think about stuff like that yet. One thing at a time. Laughing

if you put the A to Bb on LKV ( which is a good idea imo) make sure you can use it simultaneously w: your LKL : G to F
those 2 levers (changes) work well w: P6 to get a minor 7

my set up is :
LKL : G to F
LKR : Es to Eb
LKV :Cs to C#
RKV : C to D
RKR As to Bb
pedal 4 (or the 1st C6 pedal) lowers the As to Ab
