A fellow brougt me a Carpsteel, student model, to check out last week. Great looking & playing & sounding guitar. He asked how do you put a string on this guitar, when I looked at the changer, there was not enough room on the end of the changer to get the 'ball' of the string hooked on the changer. There is no way it would go on, I just know it was not intended to be a throw away guitar when you break a string, but there is just no visible way to put a string on. This needs to be straighened out. If there is a secret, please let us know!!

Turn the ball end of the string sideways and it will fit in the space and then it can be put on. Seems difficult but is not once you get the first one on. |

Ernie, was it Val that brought you the Carpsteel?
He e-mailed me about it and I just got back in town to answer him directly.
I have no problem with the ball end fitting between the changer fingers and the end plate on my Carpsteel. It is pretty tight, but it fits without touching anything or needing to be forced through.

Anyway you turn it. It will not fit. Its tight enough to where I would have place a flat head screw driver on top of the ball and tap the string in.

I'm speculating here, but I think Erv would recommend using a henway. |

Val,
I didn't remember having any problem changing string, but to make sure I grabbed the 1st loose string I could find laying around my music room, which turned out to be a .056 wound string and did a test fit with that last night and no problems with it fitting on my guitar.

I think it's too light to use a Henway. |

Can you run it up from under the changer and hook it? _________________ Emmons S10, p/p, Nashville 112, Zion 50 tele style guitar, Gibson LP Classic w/Vox AC30, Fender Deluxe De Ville and a Rawdon-Hall classical |

Val, I think maybe it's like this, only you can't see because of the clearance issue..When you get ready to change strings, loosen one completely from the keyhead, and push down close to the winding, it will unhook. Don't know why they didn't have more clearance. Try looking from the underside to see how it fastens/hooks...Bill

I spoke to Val on the phone and he says that there is not enough room for the ball end to fit between the changer fingers and the inside edge of the end plate. Ernie has confirmed this lack of space too.

Well, it's certainly a tight fit but knowing Gary Carpenter he didn't lay down 10 guitar strings and build the guitar around them.

This is not a big problem. I have worked on other brand guitars that lacked clearance to put the string ball on the pin. It is possible that this 3rd string pin might be slightly too long or not quite driven in all the way. You just need to pull the lowering finger away from the stop enough to let the changer string finger to rotate as if it were lowering the string. This will rotate the pin up so you can get the string on the pin. Since it is the 3rd string it is somewhat of a problem because it does not lower. On strings that lower you should be able to activate the pedal or lever that lowers the string and put the string on while the changer in in the lowering position. Gary might have something much simpler but this is how I handle this situation.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I spoke with Gary Carpenter on the phone. He explained that a very few of the CarpSteel guitars had narrow areas behind the changer.
I can use the top string lever, and move the finger enough to squeeze the ball through. I’m not able to do that on the lower part of the changer.
There is a post running through the middle of the changer too. I'm not able to slide the strings to the bottom.
I may use a small electric tool and take the edge/angle off the end of the housing.
Thanks again.

When it was strung up in the shop for the first time, it must have been noticed. Was it strung with the changer off?
I'm feeling for you Val. An instrument you can't change strings on? I would have expected the manufacturer to offer to fix or replace an obvious, known manufacturing defect in the changer. |

the title of this thread sounds like the beginning of a good joke...
however, i wouldn't find it funny to have more than the normal hassle of changing strings. |

Sorta like changing the AC belt on a Ford Escort.
Maybe the folks that built it will chime in with how to do it without special tools..

My carpsteel has plenty of room. Restringing is a breeze. Maybe something moved in shipping? _________________ Boston area country musician

I dunno...I think a Henway about 3-5 pounds?
Just enough pressure to open that changer and get that string on, heh.
