Dino J.A. Deane opens for the Gebhard Ullmann Clarinet Trio. Deane is a multi-instrumentalist who performed with John Zorn on his pioneering 1985 Cobra works, and has since worked extensively in trumpeter Butch Morris’ Conductions. Deane performs on trombone, synthesizers, live real-time samplers, and as he will here, a custom-made lap steel dulcimer. Deane’s music has investigated “the idea of a nonlinear multidimensional approach to music.” You will know exactly what he means when you hear his lap steel dulcimer layer melodic cells, prickly harmonics, and lush, bowed backgrounds through his assortment of electronics and live samplers. Highly recommended. _________________ Bob |

Cool. Thanks for letting me know. This is six blocks from my house and a great place for music. I'm alone with my kids that night but maybe I'll take them for the beginning.

Went to see this last night. I am somewhat skeptical about experimental music but this one delivered the goods. Performing on a lap steel dulcimer (three string, aren't they all?) guilin (chinese). He started out with a great chinese music rendition. He sequenced/built a lot of tracks to play along with but did it seemlessly, unlike so many who fiddle endlessly with the knobs. There were lots of influences but I heard Hendrix and Floyd. Lots of bar work way up on the neck. Plenty distortion. He also plays trombone. I have looked to the trombone for phrasing ideas because it has a lot of similarity to the pedal steel. So it stands to reason that his ideas and bar work on the lap steel were influenced or advanced by his trombone experience. Not songs but more soundscapes. Many, many things going on at once but some really nice bar work way up the neck. He used some extended techniques but they fit, they weren't for their own sake.

Frazer,
Thanks so much for the links and review. I spent years on the road with Dino and am lucky to have him as profound musical influence and a dear friend. _________________ Bob |
