I'm going to be sending my Mullen SD-10 to Mickey Adams for a complete refurb, and adding a LKV. Also considering having a Franklin Pedal added.

My A,B,C pedals are standard Emmons, not Day. Which position, left of A, or right of C, would be recommended for the Franklin, and pros/cons of each position?

Thanks for your comments. Reed

I use the Franklin pedal after using my A pedal most of the time, so putting it in the 0 position made more sense to me. I didn't like the idea of having to cross over B and C pedals to get there. I'm comfortable with it there. Just my opinion.

Reed,I have an Emmons pedal set up and have a Franklin pedal as #4,It works for me,I didn't want to miss the A pedal by accident because that would be a disaster for me,I'm weird like that. Laughing

One more vote for the 4th position. I like my A & B pedals to be to the extreme left. I thought about it alot before ordering my Williams. I came to the conclusion that if I'd placed it in the zero position, I'd constantly have to visually check to make sure I was covering the 2nd and 3rd pedals. I'm sure I'd get used to it, but I'm already used to covering 1 & 2.

I have it on pedal 0 and I have the pedal a little higher than my A pedal, that way I can feel the side of the pedal and not have to look to find it. It works fine for me. Pedal 4 or a knee lever may be better for you.

I've had it in the 4th position with both Emmons and Day pedals. Neither was a problem to operate.

It's not an issue if you are having a new guitar built, but if it is an existing guitar you might want to check that the left knee levers are still useable if you put the Franklin at 0 and then move everything to the right by one !

Certainly something to consider !! I use position 4 myself!

Thanks everyone so far for the input. My first instinct is to go for position 4, for all the reasons the "4 gang" have mentioned. I'm hoping others will continue to check in, and add a few more obserbations.

I guess my main concern was if the Franklin is ever used in conjuction with either the A or C pedal? So far, I don't see that being mentioned, so I'm guessing not, other than the comment about often using the Franklin after the A.

Are there any YouTube videos that come to mind, that show a tune being played that uses the Franklin in a prominent role? I'll go look

Ideally, 0 position is the one, since, as mentioned, the PF pedal is used in conjunktion w: pedal A
i have it as 4 ( moved it over there since my LKR was awkward to use when i had it in 0)

Everybody wants that PF pedal & those who have it, hardly use it

have mercy ! Winking

I have the Bs lowering on pedal 4 and leave the 6th string lower on the RKL, "splitting" the Franklin change. This works fine on my Carter, Fessy and my latest acquisition, a Mullen D10.

If you have the standard C6th pull on pedal 4 you may find the pedal is noticably stiffer, but it actually works quite well and doesn't affect the left knee-levers in any way.

I have a small coloured self-adhesive spot on the 4th pedal so I can locate it on-stage under various light conditions.

There's a lot of truth in CrowBear's observation, but if you ever want sell the guitar, a Franklin pedal will certainly be a plus over the standard 3 & 4 or (5) on most SD-10's

The Franklin pedal on my Zum is placed to the left of the A/B/C pedals – which means these three are moved one step to the right compared to the intended factory positions. Which in turn makes them line up much better with the left knee levers (especially the vertical) – perfect for me, maybe not for others.

But....if I had another new steel commissioned today, I wouldn't bother with adding the Franklin pedal; I still haven't found any use for it.

Reed, I vote for the 0 slot; I had one steel with it on 4 slot, and was too much swing for my foot to get past B & C. ...I'm not much good with the PF pulls, and not finding a bunch of uses. But, I do use it with LKR (Emmons setup) for a pleasent passing chord, and have found by accident that PF pedal with 1/2 A pedal is another good passing chord, altho I don't have a name for it. Plan to try to tune that A pedal for a split to get the chord accurate. FWIW Cool

On my U12 I put a P0 with 1 and 7 whole raise ala Brumley, which I use with the A pedal occasionally. Then I put ABC on P1 P2 P3, and then to the right on P4 the Franklin Pedal (PF). I like it to the right of ABC and use it mostly by itself or with KL's. So I have five E9 pedals, and 6,7 and 8 are B6 changes with E's lowered, though on a U12 theyre all available.

Paul uses it to the right of ABC, so I figured thats where to put it. Rolling Eyes

On the other hand, my new D10 has PF on P0 to the left of ABC. I just got it recently and am still feeling the changes out. its an 8x7, and I've never played C6 or used center KL's before. On the E9 neck though, beside P0, it's almost identical to my Mullen E9.

Whatever place for that PF (0 or 4) turns out most useful for me is where I will eventually put it, though swapping P0 and P4 on my U12 is a whole lot easier! I'll keep ya posted.

Ive placed mine at 0, as i discussed with Reed...I like having a perpendicular leg position with regards to my levers which having A at 2 provides me...Much more comfortable

I've heard it called "the flavour of the month" Wink

I have had that change on two of my guitars. Both on position 4.
One of them had the rods simply moved over from the C6 neck.
After one year i still had not found any real use for it so i put it back to the C6 again.

If i for some reason would try it again i think i would put it as 0.

I've found a lot uses for it,Tony Prior posted some sound bites a while ago that opened my ears to it's potential,I have found some very cool uses for it that I haven't heard others do yet? but I don't get out of the neighborhood much.I also have Paul Franklin's CD for the Franklin pedal which is well worth the money.I've never played a guitar that had it on the 0 pedal so I really can't compare. Granted the PF pedal does'nt get the usage of pA or pB but theres' plenty to mess around with
i try to incorporate it as much as possible

for example :
- those who use the F# to G or G# funktion on string 6 w: lever
- with PF you get to lower G# to F# on string 6 too
that makes 2 Winking

in 0 fret position:
1) by locking in PF, you get a neat "how low can you go" A boogie chord
2) while yer at it there, you've got a great pickin' position in D (strings 9 & 2 are the root - 1 is the 3rd)
3) while playing the Blues in B w: lever E to Eb, you get to go get the dom7s w: PF

there's gotta be more out there....................somewhere Winking
