After having a really fun jam session with Mickey Adams yesterday, my buddy (Daniel Arcuri) picked me up from Mickey's and we headed out to Eustace TX for my second treat of the day --- a jam session with Junior Knight.

Man, there is nothing in the world like having two jam sessions on steel in one day! Of course, I had no idea how far Eustace was from Arlington, so 84 miles later we finally arrived at Junior's house and took my guitar, pack seat and amp in and set up to play.

A big and hearty Thanks to Daniel for being my transportation to Junior's and for serving as our "official" video guy and handling the camcorder while we played. I definitely owe him some gasoline for that one! Smile

Junior was a fantastic host and man, as he always does, he played so fine! Daniel got a major treat hearing Junior and I really got a kick out of watching Daniel listening to Junior play ... he was pretty awestruck with Junior's playing. Of course, I was pretty awestruck myself (as I always am) when I hear Junior playing steel. Smile

We played steel, cut up and joked a lot and swapped old stories about Junior & Gary Hogue, and even a few stories about me (much to my red-faced laughter of "I can't believe you're bringing that one up!"), we looked through some old photos from the Longhorn Ballroom that brought back many memories and really took a few trips down musical Memory Lane. Smile

Junior switched back and forth between his MSA Studio Pro S-12 (Bb6th Universal), his Rains D-10 and an old 1965(1966?) MSA S-12 Bb6th Universal that had tone-to-the-bone. He sounded fantastic on them all.

Most of the time I literally had to force myself to play steel because I was sitting there having a great time just listening to Junior play. As soon as I convert the camcorder video to DVD and then to YouTube video, I'll post some excerpts from our jam session (with Junior's blessing).

On the way back to my house, Daniel asked me what my favorite moment was in the jam session. I'd have to say it was when we totally abandoned the music tracks and took off on an old instrumental that Junior cut with Gary on their Back To Back album ... a beautiful song called They'll Never Take Her Love Away From Me.

Junior had not played this song in years and when I asked him to play it, he said "Oh, man, I just hope I can remember it." Well, he remembered it all right! Wow, he played it beautifully. Actually, I was the one who was pretty lost on it, but I played along with him anyway and tried my best to hang in there. It was great fun playing this song with him.

It was such an honor and privilege getting to jam with Junior. I really look forward to the next time we can get together for another jam session. Junior is a one-of-a-kind and absolutely one of the Best of the Best in every sense of the word.

Thanks, Junior, for a wonderful evening of jamming and a really great time! Very Happy

i always considered a jam session a musical get together at a bar or club or lodge with lots of backing musicians, singers, guitarists, steelers, etc. this sounds more like two guys videoing themselves for whatever reasons.

That's how you consider a jam session.
Videoing don't negate the jam session feel.

It can also be what Jim described...2 or 3 guys trading licks back and forth to tracks. This is just as much a jam session and I for one am envious of Jim for having had the opportunity to jam with two of the finest steel players in one day.

Hi Chris ... I hopped online to check my emails and saw the posts here and I hope my use of the term "jam session" doesn't spark off a debate of sorts.

Your post made me curious, so I looked up the term 'jam session' in my Webster's electronic dictionary and it defines it in three ways: an informal meeting between two or more musicians to play improvised or unrehearsed music and likewise, a gathering of several musicians to play improvised or unrehearsed music while backed by a staff band, sometimes referred to as a formal jam session and an impromptu discussion.

It looks like the term is one that can be used in several contexts. Of course, the main thing about last night isn't the definition of what it might be called ... it's merely the fact that it sure was a fun evening of playing some music. Smile

As far as the camcorder? Well, it was in the car and handy, so we went ahead and captured the evening on video for the fun of it. In the 30+ years that Junior and I have known each other, it's the first time we've ever been able to just get together and jam a bit, so having the camcorder there was a really nice thing. It sure captured Junior playing some really fine stuff! Very Happy

Hi, Bent ... good to see you again. I talked with Junior on the phone today and he doesn't mind if I share some of our playing on YouTube, so as soon as I have the video converted, I'll upload an excerpt or two to share some of Junior's playing. He really sounded great. Smile

Hi, Larry ... I'm actually about to head to the living room and start the video transfer in a moment here.

It sure was a good day yesterday ... first, jamming with Mickey and having a blast, then going right over to Junior's and having a blast there as well. Mickey and Junior were both so very gracious to have me over to jam a bit with them and I really felt privileged to have that opportunity. I was definitely a happy camper. Very Happy

Here's a quick video clip from our jam session last night:

This one is In The Garden, which happened to be one of the tracks we jammed to. Junior really sings with his Rains guitar on this one. Smile

Here's another quick clip ... this one is me and Junior poking fun at each other. I did some joking about how it was when you put Junior Knight and Gary Hogue in the same room ... suddenly, on my own Mullen guitar, Junior got me back while he was playing ... Gary and I both had some identical "signature" licks that we were known for playing and I don't know if it was my licks or Gary's licks or both mine & Gary's licks that Junior was hitting me with, but it cracked me up and totally disarmed me and made me explode with laughter ...

Hi, George & Tony ... Thanks ... man, Junior is definitely the player!

Here's one final real quick clip from our jam ... Junior has this old 1965/66 MSA S-12 Bb6th Universal that was Maurice Anderson's guitar years ago. Junior, correct me if I'm getting this wrong, I think the story behind this guitar is that Reece played it on either his first or one of the his earliest universal tuning albums. This old guitar has got tone-to-the-bone and Junior plays the stuffings out of it. Man, it sounds good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C88h2F3u5Ik

You know, I really love the newer steels of today ... but, I guess I'm the nostalgic type because there's just something about the older steels that really hold a special place in my heart. I really love them (especially the mid-60s to mid-90s era).

Hi, George ...
You must not be too far from Junior's if you're in Corsicana. We'll have to get you in on our next jam session! Smile Definitely go ahead and call them jams ... we do! Very Happy

Thanks so much for your comments on the videos. Very much appreciated. Junior was definitely the real player and it was a lot of fun playing along with him. I've got some more excerpts from the tape that I'll post either tonight or in the morning.

Some of them will have Junior playing his MSA Studio Pro.

Thanks, Eddie ... yep, Junior is definitely one of the great masters of steel guitar. Smile

---- By the way, Junior ...

I haven't forgotten the other excerpts from our jam with your MSA Studio Pro. My primary charger for my camcorder died and I'm having a little trouble finding my spare charger. I know it's here in the house somewhere, and soon as I find it I can do some more clips. Smile

Well, I finally got my DVD burner problems cleared up (turned out it wasn't the burner after all, it was cheap DVDs) ... so, I was able to transfer some more from our little jam onto DVD for transfer to my computer and then up to YouTube.

This one is me and Junior on an old Gospel tune called "At The Feet Of God". When we came to this track, Junior said, "I don't know this tune, I've never heard it, how does it go?" and, well, I took it literally. Thinking I was helping, while playing it, I mentioned a couple of things in the song, but soon found it wasn't necessary for me to have said anything at all while I was playing. LOL Laughing

Despite it being a new song sprung on him, when Junior took over, he blew me away and played it as though he'd played it every day. An absolutely great job on a song he'd never heard before. He's playing his MSA Studio Pro on this one.

Jim, do you remember you and me having a "jam session" in my living room in the '70s maybe? I'm not sure of the year or even the decade but it sure don't seem like all that long ago. I wish I wasn't so far away, I would love to get to jam with you again and especially with Junior and you. Junior is one of my very favorite players as well as a favorite person to me.

Hi, Jerry ... actually, I do remember that jam you and I had quite well. That was in the early mid 80's (about '84 or '85). And we had a good time that day. Believe it or not, each time I see one of your posts, I think back to that jam session. And, you're right ... it doesn't really seem all that long ago. For some reason, stuff back in the 70's and 80's actually seem to feel more recent to me than stuff in the 90's. Smile

I, too, wish we lived closer and that we could jam again. You know, if you should ever happen to get out here in the DFW area, we'll have to go over to Junior's and jam with him.
